Hey, i've decided to take my engine out, but i have no clue on how to get it out. i was thinking of takin it out with the front subframe but then decided not to. So i'm wondering if anyone can tell me or even post some pictures on the steps to take it out. Cheers Sav |

No replies!? Probably because it is a relatively simple concept but hard work. Firstly you will need tools, namely an enging lifting bracket of some sort. Secondly you need a method to lift the engine out either with a crane (can hire one from Kennards etc) or a block and tackle if you have a beam across the ceiling of your garage for instance. Start by: Removing the bonnet via hinges Remove things like carby and manifold, exhaust manifold, alternator, dissy, starter motor to get it all out of the way, although I suppose you can still remove with these on. Same with Radiator, I prefer to remove that first before taking engine out as it is a squeeze Disconnect wiring, fuel line, choke cable, accellerator, speedo Undo the earth strap near your starter motor Depending on gearbox type, undo the mounts that hold the gear lever mechanism to the body. Either tap out roll pins to remove rod change or undo the bolts to remove remote change lever from the diff housing Undo the engine steadies left and right of the engine Undo the 4 bolts that hold the negine mounts underneath the engine and lift |

I think that if you cant work out how to pull an engine out, then just maybe you should not be attempting such a job? |

Go and buy yourself a workshop manual and have a read through a couple of times first . It's not a difficult job really , some prefer to lift the body off the subframe but I prefer to take the engine out from the top (but I do have a good engine lifter though ) . |

Get yourself a service manual for the car (pm me  ) and find an able bodied sober mate (at least at the beginning).
Everybody has to take one out for a first time - just make sure you are prepared - but most of all have fun |

Lift the engine by a point just above the centre head bolt at the front of the engine as this will make the engine tilt enough to help the diff clear the back of the subframe. I always find it easier to take off the alternator, dizzy cap and rotor and radiator because of all the wiggling necessary to get it clear, there are lots of things for it to get stuck on as it comes out, needs a little patience. Also, it's easier in a Clubman because you can take the front bar off. Pete |

It's not absolutely necessary to take off the alternator, starter etc but it would make it a whole lot easier. In a roundnose particularly it's a very tight squeeze. I humbly suggest you get some help... |

And good on you for having a go! I got my first Mini at 16, but chickened out when it came to pulling the engine. As others have said read a workishop manual or two and you will get the idea. The only real tricky part is getting the angle right to squeeze it out without scratching the firewall. If you are removing it to paint the engine bay, remove the subframe as there's less risk of scratching fresh paint when you put it back together. Otherwise it's easeir to pull it out from above so you don't have to mess with bleeding the brakes etc. Surely there is some Ausmini guys around Morwell who can help? I know there is a couple on the Moke forum. |

why do you need to take the engine out?? only asking because if something needs fixing you might not have to go through the trouble of taking the engine out. |
