Post subject:  Just some Mini-Matic Queries

hi
matic blew a head gasket
probably a good opportunity to see if the cooper head was nicked

1) would a head stamp of "12A 1456 SM"
or "12__1_6"
be characteristic of a matic head?

i was told matics came out with Small Cooper heads and "12G295" would be expected with larger valves by Doogie and Steve,
not sure what the one off mine's goin on about.
my block has the stud/washer/nut thing so people tell me its an english block

2) did matics come with metal universal joints, or rubber ones with metal U hooks, connecting the diff to the driveshafts?

thanks

Duc,
1.
'Matics (UK 850, and our 998) all had the 12A1456 head, with standard 998 valves. No 295's here..
They had 9:1 C/R, because the pistons had less dish. Also had HS4 carb before any others. All this added up to 3HP more than stock 998 Deluxe. Wow...
They all had studs, as all autos were English blocks.
Like the 1275 auto the oilways are funny- so won't go on a manual box without reworking.

2.
All had metal Hardy Spicer U/Js, same as Cooper S. No rubber joints.

I suggest you use a standard composition gasket, not the copper one. We've had some trouble with those lately.
Best gasket around for 998/1098 at the moment is the `ACL' one, IMO. Repco or AutoOne have it or can get. 8)

a) Kev thanks for that info, can i ask where it came from?
its good coz it shows my engine has been not picked and pulled and had parts nicked
but "2Ss and a Clubman" (Doogie) and "1969AllOriginalMatic/CalifornianMoker" have sworn that matics came with small cooper block heads with bigger valves, to compensate for the auto box.
Doogie said he's even pulled a couple off with a 12G295 casting
Incidently, Californian Moker wanted to sell his matic, but couldnt find the Cooper head casting so was sad about that

b) Thanks Jim, we took the head off Herman and it was blown between cyl 3/4 and darkish around 1/2 and 2/3.
He'll be off for a while but im not too bothered, he'll have a good rest

 Dont tell me that happened from the recent cruise...!!!

well, initially we thought it may have been a valve burn out coz i was pushing it on the cruise
but a head gasket going may have been from the same reason,
or maybe the head was put on in the wrong way (involves 3 stages with correct torque etc) and that wouldve been inevitable.

either way, absolutely no regrets
met lovely people, had a great day, glad he didnt kick the bucket and say "f*cket" on the actual run

Info from 2 `matics I have owned or worked on, also the Leyland `Black Book'..
If they had a 295 head someone has fitted it! I put a 202 on mine when the old one cracked..
You would lose torque down low with a 295, be NBG with a converter.
295 was only fitted to twin carb cars.. 998 Cooper, Sprite 1098, and MG1100.

The Morris 1100 Auto had the 12G295 head, not the Mini Matic.

1098 auto were pretty rare here weren't they, Brett - most `Morris 1100' autos sold were 1100S??

:D
I have a1969 998 minimatic.
When I bought the mini it had a very bad oil leak from the main end seal behind the convertor.
Since then I have had the convertor recon and are currently repalcing the covertor bush.
I am keen to talk tot and meet people with minimatics.
I am having a lot of trouble getting parts and recently had to imprt a seal from the USA.
Any help or advice would be much appreciated
Regards
Mr Meaner

I have had a few autos- Morris 1100S/1300 and 998 MiniMatics.
I stripped and fixed the 998 when it had no forward drive.

Karcraft told me a while back all parts are available in UK, and he can get whatever I want.
Alternatively try this site- they have ALL the bits and will ship to you.
http://www.jpat.co.uk/
No I've not used them but Todd Miller on MM site uses them all the time.
Check his site too for info on the AP automatics.

Same box basically was used in 998 MiniMatic and 1275 Austin America. 8)
