It's a pollution control engine, probably out of a late 998 Clubman. Or a Mini Clubman S. Or a Mini Clubman Van. Or possibly out of a Mini Moke.

A bit of paper somewhere that says it's cleaner . I'm not sure which versionit was , they started with the charcoal cannister etc but then later (77/8) they went to the full air pump system that injected fresh air into the exhaust ports to dilute the emissions gases and therefore make it cleaner on paper .

Oh , the head may have had a slightly different combustion chamber shape but not much really , main difference was the add on things like air pump and plumbing .

99H834AJH was the common or garden variety smog 998 fitted to 1977-78 Clubby S and 998LS.
Chambers in a 998 smog head are just like any other 998 (except Cooper), the ports are small but can be made as big as a 202 one can, it just takes more time.

No such thing as a smog 1098 out here Mick, they were finished years before the air pump etc came in.
