The quest is over, I hold in my hot little hand a Certificate of Roadworthiness issued in the State of Deepest Bureaucracy, Victoria :D :D :D

Now all that awaits me is the small matter of an hour on hold with VicRoads to secure a Registration Appointment, followed by my bending over for Certain Buggery over the current Queensland reg and change in engine number.

The things we do to drive a Mini...

i would assume having the rego number from qld would give them the car history so that wouldn't be a big issue?? and a little check on their registry of the new engine number will be easy enough?? or will vicroads just make ya sweat for a few days maybe weeks?

I gave up on the phone idea, it's always blocked it seems so I went in to book the appointment

From what i heard today, Melbourne DMV's are booked out for about a week ahead.

Geelong however can have you an appointment the next day, and I believe they are open on Saturday too.

Get some pretty strange people in there however.....I met a massively obese self confessed white supremacist who was on welfare and was listed as a "high Risk" person when booked for his driving exam to get his canceled license reinstated  Couldn't have been more than 30 I reckon.

Oh, except for the fact that the last time the car was registered in Victoria it was in my name, with a different engine number. Now it has Queensland registration in my mother's name, with the current engine number.

I am certain the Fine Upstanding Public Servants at VicRoads will find something about the arrangements to hold concern over; this tiny eensy bitsy slice of power is all they hold over Joe Average, and I don't doubt they'll take glee in exercising it when I show up.

Actually, I fully expect they'll decide to hold the Spanish Inquisition and request a balls-n-all audit of the car... seems to be par for the course for me at the moment.

think about booking it in Ballarat - dad did a body number change over the NSW previous reg details down there ;)

or come up here, I've done a few wierd things with them up this way and they never bat an eyelid

all they do is check the details, not stolen... no worries ;)

As long as you have a receipt for the engine you have fitted (showing the engine number) and you should not have too many hassles.

If you don't have a receipt but you know the engine is not dodgy, sell the engine to a mate, get him to sell it straight back to you and write you out a receipt.

I got my car registered at oakleigh on Wednesday. Got an appointment the day before. There were some small matters like engine numbers, them not being able to find any record of the previous owner, my receipt from 8 years ago when I bought it not being good enough proof of ownership (didn't have my name on it anywhere, as the vicroads man pointed out "if this is proof of ownership, I'm holding it now so therefore I own it")
Despite all that he let it through a few holes with a smile. Searched but never found the previous owner in their system but said 'I can let it through cause after all it is just an old mini"
He made me get out my 'screwin stick' to scrape a bit of extra paint off the chassis number to make sure it was all good. Sent me down to the local police establishment to get a stat dec for a proper proof of ownership. (basically wrote my own receipt 8 years after the fact and got the police to sign it? made him happy) Now Nellie is all registered. I'd highly recommend Oakleigh nicest man in the world and he used to own a leyland P76 so he is especially sympathetic if you have a clubbie.
Good luck, I bet your itchin to take it for a real drive...
