Post subject:  1275 or 1100

Hey im wanting to build a tough turbo'd engine. I have a 1100cc in my mini at the moment and i was either thinking of rebuilding my 1100cc or should i buy a 1275cc engine? I also have a 998cc engine sitting around would it be worth spending the money on the 998cc? I know the 1275 will give me more hp and torque but i just want something thats going to be reliable and also something that would be good to drive everyday. Thanks For any help Blake

There are a few turbo 1100s on here now, and they go bloody hard. Just go easy on the boost (under 10psi) or you will start blowing head gaskets, diffs etc.
Turbo 1275s go even harder, but break more bits (think... gearboxes...)

Any engine you are looking at about $5000 to $7000 to rebuilt it and turbo it, exlcuding much labour (doing many things yourself).

So I'd say, heck, go 1275 for more bang...

if by bang you mean your gearbox

Narrr... Gearboxes don't break themselves, people break gearboxes.

BoostedMini ran a Supercharged 1275 for 5 years with a std box. No issues...

in this instance I will stay off the 1275 bandwagon. Just make sure you rebuild your motor first. Putting a turbo on a tired motor is bad MMMMMkay.

... until he broke it, and he's just broken the Mk1 S box that he replaced it with. :? Now he's rebuilding the Mini K one again, I just sold him a good cluster gear.

The point is yeah people break boxes, but they will fail lots sooner under boost. It's the torque that kills em, not top end HP.

Say no to A-series then

If it was me, I'd go turbo 1098 ( I almost did ;) ) Sure it doesn't rev hard like a 998 but the torque will be nicer for the road and you'll come on boost sooner from the extra cc's. Id have a chat to 'pristic' or 'benjamin' as they both have very nice setups and ben is pushing 140hp!

If you dont drive it like a P-plater and don't give it enough boost to power a rocket ship, I can't see any problems :)

Cheers,
Sam

Don't say an 1100 doesn't rev hard like a 998 or any other A-series, you'll fire some people up!

I'd go 1275. And yes torque destroys gearboxes especially drop gears. Be nice, never drop the clutch treat the car with maximum respect and you might still kill it - but then again, you might not. People kill gearboxes, of course, if I never drove my Mini the gearbox would have been perfect!

I'd go 1275 with low-ish boost for a road motor, eg. 7psi.

Or do what I'm currently doing, "shove" a 4efte under the hood. 8)

Ok, as high as reliably...

Ok, I think you might pass with that. I once brought up 1100s and rev capabilities and was shot down quickly for my thoughts!

Still I think conversions are a good option, time and time again I've been told that the A-series is great, shove 20psi into it, pull 180hp and off she goes. Or build a big mofo of an N/A motor, stroke it, bore it you name it, big hp and torque.

Well that's not what it's about. To me it's twincam, it's fuel injected, it's turbo - not enough reasons yet? It's economical, it's reliable, it's tough, it's powerful, it's got a 5 speed 'box. I'll give a full comparison once it's all together, engineered and on the road

Any motor with 3 mains isn't particularly going to like revs  It doesn't mean it wont do them though...

I know exactly where you're coming from with the twin cam thing

yes we all know hybrids are the best option, but not everyone has the time or the money or the expertise to build one.

i went a-series because i thought it would be much easier, but nothing about it was easy.

i chose to build a bigblock, because i had one already, but i would have used my 1100 otherwise.

and some people may break gearboxes, but
the a series box was not designed to handle that much power.

the ERA turbo and metro turbo were limited to around 4-5 psi if i remember correctly to stop premature gearbox destruction..

and my gearbox let go with 4-5 psi..
everything is 35+ years old

Thats an opinion and not one I agree with.
Yes, hybrids are cool, yes they have new parts but imho not the 'best' option.

Ben is making massive HP with his. I am making a little less but its bloody quick.
The conversions are still 'teething' and people are having problems with those also.

For value for $ I would build another 1100 turbo.

Having the power is one thing, getting it to the ground is another. Most of the conversions are really struggling with wheelspin.

It ALL depends what you want out of the car.
1100 Turbos are pulling quicker times than $15000 conversions down the 1/4 mile. Due to traction, etc, etc... whatever the reasons it doesnt matter.

If someone has $15000+ to spend then yeah, go a conversion. But for my $ I would do A-Series turbo for sure.

blake12345 - Ben and I have 1100 turbos and you wont wipe the smile off your face.
My plan is still a SCREAMER 998 turbo running huge boost but thats next year sometime.
1100 will give you more 'off- boost' driveability. Its not as laggy as the 998 with low compression.
Mine runs 9.5:1 compression and 7spi boost and is great.
Ben has lower compression and higher boost in his. His will eat mine power wise!

If you have an 1100, I would use that... a 1275 will cost you much more to get first, then rebuild... the 1275 parts are getting more expensive and rarer.

Put it this way, if you break a crank in a 998/1100 you can get one cheap and quick... a 1275 crank is harder to find and will cost more.

For a full build, like Chong said, $5000-$7000 easy... then add hidden costs you didnt think of... so call it $8000-9000 more than likely.

Is it for a daily car or a weekender?

Pete.
