I know these sorts of questions come up from time to time, and that there will be answers on here already but I, a) Can't be bothered spending lots of time searching; b) Have tried a search but couldn't find anything or c) Don't have any clue about searching on here (tick appropriate excuse). I am doing a feature for TME on compliance plates. According to Dr Kev on another thread they were compulsory from December 1969. (do you have any written proof of that date Kev?) I have seen some early plates that were quite large and mounted on the front of the front bulkhead support beam (what's the right name for that bit?) where the triangular support bracket comes down. I think these were on very early examples (1970). I've got examples of Export Moke, 1972 standard Moke, very late Moke (1981), very late Cooper S (1971), and Mini SS (1977). I would like to use an example from each of very early plate (1969 or 1970), and Clubman GT. Can anybody send me copies, with the intention that I would like to get high-res copies for use in the magazine, or post pics up here for all to see? If you are concerned about people seeing your chassis number, I am happy to obscure the essential part of the chassis number. Cheers, Watto. |

In my talks with VicRoads regarding my Moke (which you know about Watto!) I found out that Compliance Plates are not compulsory for registration. VicRoads recognise that even if originally fitted they get lost or stolen so they will still register the car if you can prove it has been registered in Aus before or imported and modified to meet ADR's. The Moke's compliance plate is missing and I was surprised that I did not need to have a compliance plate fitted to my import 75 Corona - just an engineers certificate. Most manufactureres started fitting compliance plates in the early 70's. The compliance plates are merely a convenient way to "prove" a car has been modified/made to meet ADR's. The first ADR's took effect from 01/01/1969. BMC certainly didn't start fitting compliance plates until sometime in late 1969 or early 1970. My Dec 1970 van had the large square type compliance plate you speak of. But I don't own that car anymore so no access to the plate. I have a 1972 Clubby plate in a box somewhere and its the later, smaller type. Cheers, |

Thanks folks. 'Tis OK Brett, I have plenty of the later small types. Brenton, yes I would like a Clubman GT one, doesn't matter if it is later type. My email is [email protected] Cheers, Watto ![]() |

On almost the same subject (and I'll start a new thread as well), I am looking for a 1969 Mk1 Cooper S to photograph for the next magazine. I've got a couple of 1969 Mk2s to do, but not a Mk1 yet. This means it would be chassis number from about 5,000 or higher, with or without compliance plate or ID plate. It would need to be in Melbourne/Victoria (within a couple of hours from Geelong). Cheers, Watto. |
