Post subject:  CV JOINT NUT

I purchased a "BTA249 <B> CV JOINT NUT - MINI COOPER S"

I have a 1-5/16 3/4Sq Drive socket, but it is too small for the nut.

What size socket should I purchase?

1 5/16 is the correct size socket for a disc brake CV nut.
It should fit the CV if you have 7.5" discs, or the 8.4" discs.

The only other size is a smaller nut fitted to drum brake and Cooper 997 disc brakes which you say is the reverse of the problem here.

What kind of brakes do you have?

I have 8.4 disc for LS1275

Just got the socket.

It has "CR-MO 1-5/16" on the side of it.

Yeah then it's the right socket, but something might be fouling the nut, or there's a problem with the nut or socket.

Using a ruler, measure across the nut from flat to flat. You should get a measurement of 33.34 (to be accurate) but get the best indication you can. If it's larger than this by a margin, then the nut has probably been machined from metric stock or something similar.

Other than that, make sure the edges of the nut aren't deformed to stop the socket sliding on (You might need to persuade it a little with a hammer to slide on) and see if you can inspect and measure the socket as well (it's a little difficult to do so without verniers).

One of these will be the culprit.

The new nuts being supplied seem to be mostly metric. I could get my son to check the ones on the moke but I think they are a 31mm socket.

They are 34mm metric hexagonal bar stock now, because they are made elsewhere than UK.
It is annoying- when I got the first pair, I put them on the mill and made them 1-5/16" to fit my socket..
Since then I've bought a 34mm socket.
