Post subject: | Are auto boxes any good? |
Hi all, I am just curious about auto boxes and there ability to handle power. Tourqe can kill a manual box, but generally auto boxes (by design) cope with it well. So can they be rebuilt? and would it be worth bothering? I am starting a turbo 998 so I am just looking at options. It would be cool though, big turbo high stall, with a near standard cam. should putt around off boost ok? just wondering...... |

Mini auto boxes are nothing like conventional auto boxes (the powerglides, torqueflites, turbo 350s, C4s, etc). You cannot just go and buy a high stall converter off the shelf. The real killer with the mini auto box is that the oil is used not only for the engine and the gearbox, but also for the torque converter. Frequent regular oil changes are necessary because the oil is working so hard. I believe that to expect the oil to also cool down a turbo charger would be beyond the ability of any oil currently available. Cheers, Ray. |

One problem with the Mini autobox is that 1st gear is pretty tall and the stall speed of the torque converter can't be increased much above stock. At least, the local converter gurus here in Sydney can't, they have done a few for Greig Malaure's GF's 1430 `matic. For a 998 auto, the stall speed is only 1400-1500 rpm. I don't have factory figures for the 1275, but I believe it's around 1800 rpm. Same converter. This low stall speed makes it hard to utilise the extra power available in a tuned A series, whether it's via engine mods or a hairdryer- low speed engine torque is usually worse than a stocker. So- it's fine once on the move, but launches are not ... `brisk'. ![]() |

Pull the torque converter off and fit a clutch. Stall wherever you want then. ![]() |

Forget the auto idea and drive a manual like god intended { three pedals and only two feet !!!!!!] There is a gentleman looking to buy a torque converter somewhere in AUSMINI so sell it and be done with that idea. P.S. The engine block / cam / oil pump / and other thing are differant from auto to manual inc. subframe. |

If you have an automatic block and want it converted to work on a manual box, I do them. See my sticky thread in the mods forum. ![]() |
