Post subject:  2 muffler system
hey guys
the car is still way to loud for my liking and wanted to know how many people have got 2 mufflers under the car, either in the tunnel and the oot or just under the boot, was looking at making a funny triangle shaped muffler to fit in a corner of the car and the to the RC40,

With the Turbo now, I have a Muffler at the back and also a resonator in the tunnel.
Ben can probably add more, its off his old setup

MUCH quieter now and nicer to drive.

Hooray - two other people who think a noisy mini is a bad thing. I also find that it becomes irritating after a very short time.

Gulgong has just had its new crop of P platers and they cruise up and down the main street looking for god knows what but each of them has a noisy exhaust. It just seems stupid to me to have a toyota corona with a noisy exhaust and then to redline it in first, second and third (3,600 rpm, I think) and then let it burble back on the overrun.

The shop keepers should put big signs in their windows "there is no talent in Gulgong so go cruise elsewhere".

Hello, I too needed to quietten things down. I have a 2 Inch system straight through center exhaust and it was a quite loud. Lately I inserted a straight through 2" hot dog before the muffler and it's all so very quiet now without any noticeable loss of power.

Do be careful with hotdogs, some have vortex shape triangle pieces that stick out to "collect" noise. These are bad news for performance. What you want inside both mufflers is just 2" straight through perforated metal with no protrusions or blockages.

No need to buy an "RC40", just head down to your local muffler place and ask to have a look through their mufflers (litterally look through them! :lol: )

my muffler is not a straighthrough but is legal., but i have flanges so i can swap it out for when i need the extra couple of horses.

With noise restrictions now even on race tracks (because people build houses next to them) it's necessary to have a relatively quiet competition car as well.
This is a 2" system with an 18" hotdog followed by a a straight through oval muffler of similar size. Still has a nice note, it's not restrictive and manages to just stay under the 85db noise limit.

Vizard points out that the twin box RC40 allows more power (HP and Torque) than the single box RC40. & is quieter!

The first 'box' is simply a 'hotdog' straight through resonator as described above.

Much nicer to drive than the single.

i got the idea of the triagle shape one from a farm car at work, i was going to get a 2 inch mandrel bend(90 deg) and drill holes in it and then weld up a box for it to sit in and suround the bend with steel wool and then pack the box with rockwool,

where did you get that 18 inch hot dog from curly, if i cant find one that long i may have to weld 2 together or make my own doing the same thing with rockwool,

i want this thing super quiet,

The local exhaust shop had them about 10 years ago - they never seem to wear out :D

My car is now pretty darn quiet for 120hp. 95% of the sound is now coming from the intake :oops:

i reckon u may be better of back to standard if u want to quiet it down or putt a hotdog through it with a muffler on the end.

:D mines only got the hotday and 2inch all the way with twin tail pipes on the back and it is loud as....BUT I LOVE IT

My 1360 is like that too, not much can be done to shut up a gurgling 45 Dellorto with 38mm chokes in it... :lol:

For me it works to appear utterly confident and nonchalant about the car and its modifications - "but these are all original parts officer, all I'm doing is maintaining a historic car in roadworthy state, they didnt have noise restrictions in 1970".

Worked for most cops so far except the one who kept pointing to the blocked off hot water outlet for the heater and claiming that I blocked off an engine breather and its making my exhaust noisy. Funnily enough the second cop put him straight and started asking me how hard it goes and how he had one back in the day.

Oh and installing a Lukey straight through did wonders for the exhaust noise in my car.
