Post subject:  Workshop Equipment - where to buy
I'm going to be starting on a new resto project (clubby ute) soon, my first since moving over here from the UK. I didn't bring much with me in terms of workshop equipment. Essentially I need everything except for a welder and compressor (I thought they'd be expensive so i brought them with me :roll: ).

Question is, where is a good place to get most of what's required? Bit of a wide ranging question I know. Generally i'm thinking the following:

Automotive stuff: jacks, engine stands, hoists etc
Workshop: A good bench, vice, bench drills/saws/grinders
Other: Durty calandars sponsored by tyre manufacturers :lol: (definite requirement).

Is there a one-stop-shop for this or am I going to be flitting between places?

Thanks for that, looks like a good place to start. Shame that $90k CNC machine from Hare and Forbes is bigger than my garage haha.

As usual you get what you pay for etc, but you may be suprised just how much good quality tools do cost. For spanners and and sockets, two brands stand out and they are kingchrome and sidchrome. There is snap-on of course.

Buy carefully because you could pay nearly thirty dollars per socket in some places or two dollars in other places only to have the chinese or indian made socket snap open the firt time you put a load on it.

I would hate to have to rebuild a tool kit now.

If you just want a selection of tools the best place to go is garage sales. You get a lot of rubbish but it's amazing you can pick up for next to nothing. Get there early cause they are popular.

Thanks guys. It's going to take a little while to build up my workshop again but i can take my time doing it. Luckily tools here are quite a bit cheaper than in the UK but i suppose that's got a lot to do with the influx of cheap chinese made stuff.

Just wish i'd brought over more of my tools instead of giving them (and my mini) to my brother.

I got a set of kinchrome sockets on greys online
1/4, 1/2 and 3/8 from 4mm to 32mm metric and AF for $220 delivered - bargain!
For engine lifters and jacks go to supercrap when they are one sale - cheap as

1/2 drives are for tractors and big stuff, IMO. :lol:

Sidchrome makes a nice 1/4 and 3/8 drive set with both metric and A/F, for ~$100. It does up to 3/4" (19mm), plenty for most Mini work. They will fit in places where 1/2 drive sockets won't.
Yes they are made in Taiwan now but the quality is still there.

Apart from this set you might need/want:
a 1-1/8" socket (drum hub nuts)
a 1-5/16" socket (steering wheel, disc hub nuts, crank pulley bolt, cam nut). If you buy a 34mm instead it'll fit the newer disc hub nuts too.
a 1-1/2" deep socket (ball joints, flywheel bolt)

The last 2 sockets are 3/4" drive. :wink:
