hey guys

i took the emission control thingo off the front of my engine today and filled in the four holes where it plugged in with these 4 allen key holes (hope you guys know what im on about here)

anyway, it doesnt wanna start now. um, so yea? help?

Most likely you've disturbed the spark plug leads. Check that they are all on firmly, that the wire between the coil and the distributor is connected and that you are getting sparks at the spark plugs.

I'd say its a late (77-78 ) Clubman, and he's removed the "air pump."

I did the same thing to my 78 when I had it and all was fine afterwards.

Check the basics. Do you have Spark, Do you have fuel etc. You probably upset something else in the process rather than the problem being from the pump removal.

ummmm why did u remove the emisson control/air pump from ur engine.... if ur mini came out with it u should have it on or ull be paying big $$$$$$ if u get pulled up for it

Tiny, I wouldn't worry about that down here. I've never seen a Mini on the road here with the air pump. I've got a 77 LS, air pump holes blocked off. I couldn't find and air pump if I wanted one (don't need one anyways, Starlet Turbo motor...mmmmmm).

The Air Pump's were fitted as part of ADR 27 for emission requirements. That ADR doesn't exist any more, or at least is quoted as "not used" therefore would it be a problem to remove an air pump? It is not "superseded by" as some of the outdated ADR's have been. I was pretty sure ADR 27 was a time related thing, as no car of that age would comply after a few years anyway.

Not sure of what the legalities are with that one.

Air pumps for these old things are NLA now anyway. They were fitted to dilute the exhaust with fresh air, thus lowering the emission figures when they were quoted in %.
Trouble was, they burned more fuel (and used power) to do it- if emissions had been quoted then in grams/mile I bet the numbers would have gone up, not down. :lol:

The whole emissions thing is a crock here- even modern cars are never tested annually (or even less frequently) to see if they still comply, unlike in the UK and US.

Don't lose any sleep over it... :wink:

Post subject:  Air Pump Removal.
There are ways of leaving the pump in it's place so the car looks original. The vanes in the pump can be removed so it is just there for the ride and all the plumbing can be blocked off. But if is is not necessary for the Legal side of things and you are not interested in the original under bonnet look just get rid of it. Make sure you plug up all the holes where you remove pipes. You will gain power by getting rid of it there is a good couple of Kilos there to start with.

And Japan Doc, dont forget Japan - that's why we get all of their half-cuts and engines, they can no longer comply!
