Post subject:  Making the car quieter

My car is quite noisy inside, particularly when the engine is on and the car is moving.
So I want to make the thing quieter, and am looking for tips for things to use/places
to do things.

So far, the plan consists of:
-Second muffler
-dynamat on the inside of the firewall, and in the footwell areas
-more dynamat against the rear seat, and in the rear 1/4 panels
-carpet underlay or some kind (currently running none)

The other thing is if I put dynamat on the rear seatback, and then (like most young whipper snappers con-sarn-it) want a subwoofer in the boot, will it cut a lot of the sound from it, making it a pointless install?

Currently the exhaust system is some LCBs and a single muffler at the rear, I don't
know what type it is.

don't forget to but dynamat on the doors. and sides of the car as that is where a lot of noise is generated and also replace your seals with new ones

The earplugs would interfere with my current sound deadener........more noise......from the stereo.

Yeah mycar was too noisy - I got threatened to be defected. i had twin exit pipes with a hotdog - i was heard and not seen :D . Anyway i got another one on and he left the hot dog there and put a split chambered one on and it quietened it down dramatically you can now talk to each other at 100kmh. Plenty of sound deadener/ underfelt will go a long way

new seals all round and some body deadener in the wheel arches/underseal on the bottom of the car..or more coats..

Dynamat it like crazy.

What does the parcel shelf consist of on a Rover? Like a Aussie Mini, where there are little to no holes/vents?

All good strategies. A second 'muffler' will help a lot, as will new door and window rubbers.

I used dynamat extreme on the entire floorpan, and firewall, and a thicker layer of dynamat Extremeliner on the firewall and front footwells.

I would also use a 'blanking plate' or similar to cover the speedo hole from the engine bay, then cover this whole area with dynamat as well. This is where you get a lot of induction noise coming through.

The other areas to do are inside the doors, inside the rear quarter panels and the boot lid. & on the rear seat back. This won't be cheap.

Dynamat reduces panel resonanance, and distortion. By applying dynamat to your car's panels you will reduce road noise and reduce vibrations to a minimum. (it might sound like there are more, but that is cos you can here them now :wink: ). The other great benefit is that you can have a large sub (if that's your thing) and it will sound better. Cleaner, deeper and clearer. Effectively louder too, as it isn't competing against as much road noise.

If you are going to install it in the boot, some other things to consider;
1) You need to have a bass port into the 'cabin' to make it effective, dynamat or no dynamat.
2) You will have a lot of panel resonance from the fuel tank and boot lid, rear parcel shelf etc, so more dynamat will be needed.
3) No more room for luggage :roll:

Isnt Dynamat really heavy? I know a mate who had it installed due to sound system (showcar only) and after dynamatting the wazoo out of the thing, it added close to 100kgs :shock:

I'd be interested to know how heavy dynamat is too. When I restore my car I intended to dynamat everywhere. If it adds 100kg I will put up with the noise.

Also worth checking for loose or broken grommets in the firewall. That can let in heaps of engine noise. A broken gearlever boot is another common entry point for noise.

I'm familiar with dynamat and how good it is.....last year I did the swift.
Biggest difference was the (effective) increase in bass from the sub.

If I get really organised (unlikely) I'll take some sound meter measurements as I do things,
and weigh what I put in. (i could also measure my 0-80 kph times to be a wally as well)

By the time I will have finished, there will be close to 25-30kg of sound proofing (dynamat) in my mini. The heavy one is the Extremeliner, as it has a layer of lead. But if you use the Dynamat Extreme, with a lightweight underfelt under the carpets, you'll do pretty much the whole car for the addition of 20kgs.

Great for daily drivers, not so much for weekend warriors.

Hasn't hurt the performance of my mini noticeably. :wink: :wink:

the most important panel you can apply dynamat to is the roof :wink:

because dynamat is so dense, it absorbs sound waves,
and because it adds mass to the panels, it changes the frequency the panels resonate at (which means the speakers wont be fighting against their own sound waves bouncing back off the panels.)

yes it adds a lot of weight, but modern cars weigh a lot more than old ones and are much quieter.

a twin box exhaust is a good idea, the larger the pipe the louder the exhaust so leave the 2" for the racetrack., and adding a rolled in tip and having a side exit will also help reduce noise.

all the other suggestions are good 8)
