Can someone please tell me what the best way is to remove rust from the outside roof rim on a 78 clubman? will patching it up work or is it better to replace the piece.

Cheers

It's most likely not rust, but is staining from the original contact adhesive they used to stick the roof lining on.

There have been some who have used vinyl spray to paint the hood lining, but I am not a fan really...

It's certainly worth attempting to clean it before removing replacing it entirely.

They are pretty cheap to replace, but I would consider trying turpentine and then acetone if that didn't work. Both of these will dissolve the contact glue, but they will have an effect on the material as well. the acetone may ruin the 30+ year old material for good. The turps is more gentle and will dissolve the glue, but it will not necessarily remove it from the material meaning it may just smudge the stain only removing a little....

rust... ?

do you mean brownish stains around the edge, above the windows?

if so, then you're in trouble.... that stuff is there from the factory, it's glue that has melted through the material.

The best fix is vinyl paint, spray it over the headlining.... mine was done by the previous owner, and it took me ages to realise it was painted

ah... well, you did say 'roof lining'

you'd better put up pictures.... my cooper has a light surface rust in the channel, which I'm not too concerned about, but it has bubbles coming out from under the drip rail, which I am concerned about

there are many types of rust, just like cancer, some benign, and some malignant

If its the drip rail your talking about there easy to replace..I just used a cutting disc on a grinder and used it vertically not flat..and tape a flat piece of tin to the side of the car so you don't damage the car when slips happen.. ''A'' grade panels sell the drip rail..Have to wait for photo's...to see where your talking about...cheers!!

The only place i know of is ''A'' grade panels...Postage isn't much...You could get a sheet metal worker to make them...but the ones ''A'' grade have are some type of metal that wont rust..can't remember the name... The angle was very slightly out so i got a sheet metal worker to bend a little bit more.....When i was talking about the grinder above >>>>find the spot welds and work from one end,,grind 1or 2 of carefully don't go to far and hit the gutter...but even if you,, do just hit it with the mig and linnish it back flat..Fold the drip rail down as you go and grind the next one and so on... Cheers!!

No he's talking about the drip rail, it is spot welded on under the roof gutter.

By the look of the pics it looks like both your gutter & drip rail have rust issues, it would be a pretty major job to repair, i have a mate who could have a look at it for you.PM me if you'd like his details.
