Post subject:  Diff housing needs repair
Anyone know of a competent welder who's good with cast aluminium repairs?
I started stripping down an all synchro remote change box on the weekend and found a crack in the diff housing. The crack is in the back part of the casting where the remote control housing bolts to, so it's not in a crucial area but it does need repairing to stop it propogating any further. If the job's bodged and the casting ruined, the whole gearbox casing will be useless as you can't mix and match box and diff housings.

Whaddaya reckon Kev - you were a welding engineer when I knew you in another life weren't you?

BTW I'm in Orange, so anyone further away than Sydney's probably too far!

Must be an aluminium welder in Orange, Dave, it's piss easy to do (if you have TIG or are set up for MIG on aluminium).
I have one here for Mike, same deal- Ivan (Mini Spares & Repairs, Castle Hill) is going to do it. :wink:

Yeah I'm sure there is Kev - trouble is I don't know any that I'd trust implicitly. I might be fussy, but I'm always cautious about using someone that I don't know or hasn't been recommended, and I hate to see my parts stuffed beyond use. Had that happen before.
Anyway I 'spose I should ask around, I've got plenty of engineer/toolmaker/fitter friends who oughta know someone. I guess it's just that it's a mini part that I posted on here first.[/u]

Anybody that repairs alloy boats could do it easy. It welds pretty well.
It's only a flange for the remote, won't leak oil anyhow. :wink:

if worst comes to worst i'll be out there thursday and i could drop it to kev then pick it up in a week or two and drop it back along with a dizzy :)
