Post subject:  Safety Advice on Sand Blasting

Okay so ive got myself a little sand blaster, i know about warping panels and stuff, i know about silica in river sand.

so heres my set up, Moke, Compressor, Plastic blast screens, Home sandblasting gun, garnett, respirator with dust/particulate filters in it, gloves and a face shield,

now my main concern is breathing, is the respirator enough or should i have an air wash mask? im going to set up a dust extraction system in the blasting area but anymore advice would be helpful, i have tried doing a bit of research but couldnt come up with much.

Cheers in advance.

Note: Any advice given will not be held in any legal form, it is merely for my own safety and to clear up my concerns.

If you have the right type of filter for the respirator, well you are pretty much covered.
The only thing I can add is ear plugs. The air blast gets pretty noisy, especially after an extended period it really takes a toll. Certainly worth keeping the garnet out of your ears as well. I figure however you probably already had thaem in mind given the detail you have gone to.

A good respirator is a must, an air wash hood is a bit much, and expensive to purchase, also a larger air supply is needed to run it. Is the blaster enclosed? ie in a cabinet? or more of a mobile blaster? A thing to watch out for is the PSI you run the blaster at, if your stripping paint and other coatings be careful not to pit the metal as this can cause corrosion and you don't want that :P what size bead are you using?

Cheers

Think about using a full body suit that just shows your face, hands and feet as the spray back can be annoying and it will get everywhere

i've set up a booth something similar to the one pictured below, that being my old one and getting worn out after spraying my mini in it. i have now got ventilation and dust extraction hooked up to it and a bigger compressor, im blasting at about 90psi with a pretty small gun that while slow, does the most perfect job, will upoload pics of the moke when i can acess my memory card
