has anyone built a circuit car (mini) just would like to know how much it would cost to run build etc i am looking at buliding one to race

What class are you thinking of and how serious do you want to get ? something for club level fun will be 1/2 to 1/4 the price of a sports sedan or something really serious . It's often cheaper to buy an existing car and run it , have a dig through the varuious mini club websites and their for sale sections and see what's availible and for how much .

Just a reference to adding up the cost invloved in motor racing. There was one on the Historic Touring Car Club of Vic a while ago buts its been removed so must have sold. It was a group Nb and I think it was $15 K.

You could probably find a lightweight Mini sports sedan for half the price of a decent Grp N car. Bolt on a big turbo, some new sticky slicks and you'll go fast.
Getting up amongst the placegetters in your class, however, will require practice, patience and regular injections of capital.

I too had to laugh at 'Bean Counter' and 'serious racing' being used in the same post . It's an oxymoron. If you're serious about being competitive, I doubt you'll be able to work within the constraints of any type of budget.

A fast car isnt going to make you go fast.

1. Buy a slow one and drive it until you can drive it fast
2. Buy a fast car and discover how slow you are.
3. Run out of money
4. See 1.

Bean, why don't you go and race go karts for a season - you will soon learn how to drive fast. I've raced go-karts competitively for years a while back and I can still get in a kart and go fast now, it does come back to you.

Last time I went out (about 2 years after the last time I had been in a kart) I ended up only 0.2sec off the best lap time. Even go-karts for me ended up getting too expensive just for a bit of fun (for me).

I'm guessing you think the fastest way to drive fast is the same way you do in racing games on the computer?

I did a costing of running an Alfa 1750 Guila Berlina for club racing and hill climbs

Here were the costs
Car: $5000.00
Compulsory improvements (such as roll cage, external kill switch, catch tank, extinguisher etc) $4,500.00
Tyres (6 races) $1,500.00
Entrance Fees $500.00
Fuel $1,500
Accomodation for events $700.00
Cams License and Instruction $750.00

and then I would be at the tail of the field and that assuming no damage or mechanical failure.

Thats the cheapest i could come up with.

Track days were far cheaper but are not competitive

Help us out then Bean , what is your racing experience and what are you hoping to achieve in what class with the mini , do you want to consistently win or are you happy to stay in the middle of the field and just enjoy it ?

We may be getting off track bean, and some replies could be seen as negative. I for one am glad someone does have the budget and ability to get out on the track and all the better if its in a mini. I will be happy to see you out there on the track and I will gladly wave the flags for you if you race in Melbourne. I think some of us are just envious of someone who is able to fulfill what a lot of us would love to do and I wish you well in this pursuit. I hope we can help locate a suitable car to get you up and running. Are you after a Group Nb/Nc or a sprint car? Cheers.

bean, your going about this the wrong way, dont get your back up. you say budget is no option, even im finding it hard and im looking for an nc car to start with, that i can do all the work on myself.
have a search, i posed a question about motor racing a while ago. its quite expensive, as i think you'll find out. however, id imagine at least 15k is needed, to be somewhat competitve, and a whole lot of knowledge.

In all seriousness......

I am building a track car at the moment, a 10/10th's racer.

The build will cost me about $20k one would think.

Back a few years when I raced my GTR XU1 it would cost me about $8-10K per season, including licenses, scrutineering and insurance, maintenance and consumables.

One of the costs a lot of people forget about is travel costs - if you are building a dedicated track car, it wont be registerable, so you will need a trailer, and something to tow it with - this costs bucks. Also, factor in protective equipment, a good helmet, 2-layer or 3-layer suit and boots will set you back at least $3k.

But, if money is not option, go and do it and have fun! Just dont expect to play at the pointy end of the field for your first few seasons.
