Post subject:  anti-polution

Was just reading the thread on idling and noticed the post 76' anti-polution crap. I have Vizards book and the old round nose gregories manual but own a 76 clubbie, guess I need an updated book. Anyways when did anti-polution arrive in mini land? The head on my engine looks like it had anti-polution attached as there are four tubes which have been closed off. Did the 76 have anti-polution or would it be a newer head on motor? Motor is a 998 but I dont know about internal mods will check them out when I replace the valve stem seals. I dont want to have to source the gear to get it registered.

The air pump & its plumbing came in late `76 I think. We had both a 77 and 78 with it, our early 76 didn't though.

I would just plug the 4 head holes with proper 7/16" UNF grubscrews, route the breather hoses from charcoal canister to rocker cover, and crankcase to carb vac so it works & looks legit.
Most inspection stations (NSW anyhow) don't know what they are looking for anyway.
If you get pinged, go find the proper plumbing, there must be lots of this stuff S/H sitting on peoples shelves. But I think new air pump parts are NLA now. :wink:

My clubby is 8/1976 with the original 998 motor. It has ALL the anti polution gear, which includes the air pump, air injection mechanicals (4 tubes plumbed into the head), charcoal canister, and a mountain of air hoses into the inlet manifold.

In some states you will need all this gear to get rego. In other states (and we all know which one in particular :wink: ) you can remove it and do what you like.

Yours sounds like it has been removed in a dodgy way, and I would take the good Doc's advice and buy some grub screws for your head, rather than leave the blanked off tubes in place.

Thanks for the advice guys. Think I will try and rego as is for the moment doesnt cost much for a trip to the inspector and claim its an aftermarket head. Going Bush for my inspection, a friend of a friend type of mechanic, so keeping fingers crossed on that one. I used to have a gemini with the same cut off system a few years back, thrashed it daily for two yrs until some mug stole it on my birthday. :x Might be better to go grub screws though. Dont want to play with the engine too much though as she purrs quite well.

Alternative to buying grubscrews (which cost $3+ each in that size):
Get some old seatbelt mounting bolts, cut a short piece off and put a hacksaw cut across it for a screwdriver.
All seatbelt mounts are 7/16" UNF, in Oz anyway (& probably the world). 8)
