Alrighty, I have a few questions. Gloss finish and matt finish acrylic paint... I have both for my mini (will eventually be painted like the paul smith mini) Matt finish: - Do i rub it back after the final coat or does that damage the matt finish? Gloss finish: - Do i have to rub it back after the final coat? what if i like that rough matt appearance straight after spraying and want to leave it like that? will it be ok? Keeping in mind that the whole car will be finished with a top coat of clear Cheers |

If you are going to put a clear top coat over the matt and gloss paint, whatever finish the clear coat is will be the finish over all. You will lose the matt if the clear coat is gloss and vica versa. Don't rub back the last coat of matt if you want to keep it matt. Also remember that matt paint is hydroscopic and will absorb and hold water, same way primer does. Can lead to rusting. What exactly are you intending to do? Gig |

no, you are right. the paul smith mini was a gloss finish. but i am not making a replica. im just stealing the rather colourful idea ![]() hmmm iwill use a clear gloss finish for the top coat... i didnt know that about matt paint holding onto water. but then again, it doesnt surprise me. what exactly am i intending to do? errrr who knows, im kinda half playing it by ear. i just want my car on the road hehe. after priming and everything, i am going to use ALOT of different coloured auto spray can and do lot of different sized vertical stripes running up and over the body. but i have a creative vision in my head which is too hard to explain fully. and when she is finished, she may not even look as other people expected her to. so, lots of masking and lots of patience |

Check you're not using housepaint for a start. I've not heard of gloss and matt in automotive paint finishes, they are normally either 2 Pak enamel or Acrylic Lacquer. Whether you get a matt or gloss finish depends on the technique and spray gun settings; whether you block it back (1200 wet & dry with soapy water) and whether you buff it with cutting compound; and finally whether you clear coat it as described. For a home job, acrylic lacquer is the way to go. You could just spray it, not block it back or clear coat it and it would be more of a matt finish (probably with what they call "orange peel". If you block it back and buff it (and clear coat it if desired) it should give you a nice smooth gloss coat, but yes, you will be rubbing back all the orange peel which gives it it's matt appearance in order to get the smooth glossy finish. I don't see a problem with clear coating without blocking back, but it would take some of the matt appearance away, but not look good as good as one which has been blocked back. Why not practise on a spare panel and see which finish you prefer. KB |

There is a matt finish paint you can get the is not hydrscopic. I think PPG make quite a few colours in a matt finish. You even coat it in a matt clear! Try the PPG website or your local distributor. |

Yeah, we have a spare door. i might try out a few different looks on that. i like the idea of using a non hydroscopic clear top coat. that would keep that matt/orange peel look. ![]() |

Doesn't matter if clear or colour coats acrylic paint dries to to matt to semi gloss then needs buffing to acheive mirror finish you may be able to get some flatting base to get finish you are after |
