Ok was a big day today, brought a 40ltr compressor as an excuse to motivate working on the mini, and a few gadgets to get started. Yay, hey i'm telling everyone except the mates most likely to borrow it for a yr or two. So anyways got home and started removing the seats from the roof, the bonnet from the door etc and store them properly.

So i'm fishing around in Giovanis pockets (my mini) and found the leyland passport to service. Well least I know it had the same plates as when brought new. Havent checked engine number yet but its a 998 by the markings.

Ok So what do the various motors rev to standard? 850, 997,998,1100,1275 and any others I have forgotten.

Giovani was fitted by a previous owner with a triple cluster of sports gauges and a tacho. But when I cranked the motor last a fuse was blown, so instruments werent working and i just wanted to make sure he ran. By ear i would of said revving about 5000.

In the lovely jacket of the passport were a few reciepts and a piece of paper with rev ranges and speeds, not sure if this was a guide or not, was hand written. But if so says revs at 6600 = 170kms

This sound normal?

They all had single valve springs except the 998 Cooper & Cooper S, which had doubles.
997 Cooper's single springs, good for 6500.. were stronger than 850 & 998 Deluxe had.

Single springs were good for maybe 6000 new, less when they get old.

Doubles were good for 6500-7000, but there's not much point, you are well past the power peak with stock cams.

5950 rpm is a good maximum.
standard cranks tend to crack at 6000rpm(especially 1100's) Some engines will rev past this, but most times the damage is done.
Balancing helps.
