Post subject:  Gearbox question?

Hi All,

Can anyone please identify this Gearbox number for me: 22G68.

Which model is it from & when was it used (which era)?

Any other detail would be appreciated (synchro, etc).

It also has a serial number 5/22013. Will that give me any info?

Thanks.

It's a 3 synchro, baulk ring synchro.
Can be either A or B form gears.
used on 850, 998, 997 and 998 Cooper, remote shift or magic wand.

Doc will tell you more than me but i think its to do with the angles of the teeth on the laygear...at what angle they mesh...

The tooth form was changed around 1964, B form are stronger- and were used on all A series Mini boxes thereafter. I think their `pressure angle' is different.

To see if the box actually has Cooper gears in it, count the teeth on 3rd gear, should be 24T. (23T was used on 850).

A Cooper 997 laygear (A form) should be p/no 22G76, or 22G197.

Many parts for these old boxes are now NLA, so good luck...

B type gears can be fitted into these boxes if you fit the whole geartrain.
