Post subject: | Australia please vote which engine oil |
I have done a few research and come up with 3 brands of engine oil that I should be using for the following engine: Year 1994 1275 Automatic running a carbie. Following are the brands and grade for engine oil recommended: castrol Magnatec 10W40 or GTX2 20W50? Penrite HPR10? Shell Helix Super 20W50 or multigrade 20X50? Please vote at your best knowledge and thank you once again for your input. |

The factory MiniMatic handbook (1969) says- "SAE 10W/30, 10W/40, or 20W/50. Additional additives are NOT to be used under any circumstances". I'd stick with 20W/50 in an old box, as the oil does get pretty hot. If running 10W/30 I'd want a cooler on it. ![]() Don't run semi-synthetics like Castrol Magnatec 10W/40 etc, the bands and clutches won't grip. That eliminates one of your options. I'd go with K-Mart KMX or Valvoline 20W-50. Like I recommended before, do a search, there is heaps on here that will help you make up your mind. ![]() |

Stay away from grades with anti-wear additives, this means don't use Magnatec. It's a good oil but not in an automatic, the plates and bands will slip. My original drivers handbook for a Mini automatic says use 10W/40 or 20W/50 grades, with NO antiwear additives. Any good name brand 20W/50 will do out here.... it's hot. ![]() |

The handbook for the 1100 Automatic says... Quote: Automatic Transmission---- 10w/30 or 10w/40 multigrade MS oil.
Use no additives. Do not exceed recommended change period. I would go with what the doc says. These boxes get a workout. |

I would change it every 1500 miles, the filter too. Most failures in these boxes are due to dirty oil. Cheap 20W/50 changed often is better than exxy oil left in too long. ![]() |
