Post subject:  tapping sound from valve train after head gasket replaced.

my 1100 houndred sound like a million bucks, i did a timing chain conversion done, there was no sound coming from the engine, perfect. there was a lot of water build up in the top of the rocket cover. it was time for a new head gasket. i replaced the head gasket and fully reco'd the head. the engine started like a million dollars. first turn of the key. but there was a tapping sound. i throught it could be a dry lifter or something. i drove it around the block and came back and it was a bit louder, but more clearer sound. i rechecked the valve clearances, they hadn't moved, perfect. but the sound was still there. help. what could it be.

any ideas. i have a set of healthy 1275 lifters. will they fit and should i change them.
thaks heaps

Don't worry about the spelling, it's a glitch we're currently working through  . Normal viewing will commence again shortly.

Changing out the lifters shouldn't be needed, are you sure you adjusted your rockers in the correct sequence?

Also I often make the mistake of miscounting the rockers in my rush to get the job done. ...

First off check that each of the valves are fully opening and closing - the easy way to do this is take out the spark plugs and push the car forward slowly while in fourth gear - watch closely to see there is a smooth opening and closing of each valve. You do the same on the starter motor but you may miss a sticking valve.

I am assuming that neither the timing chain change and the head gasket did not involve taking out the cam followers (what you are calling the lifters) and that the push rods are straight and have no damage.

Since it started so well then I also assume you got the timing marks right and and that its not a valve head tapping a piston.

You may have to measure the travel of each valve and set the gaps according to the opening and closing travel. Graham Russell had a description of how to do this in an earlier TME magazine.

My first money is on a sticking valve - that is a valve stem that is binding in a valve guide although the machine shop should have checked for clearances.

:D okay I see that we have all caught a tiny spelling disease. :D
Whose the clever bugger :D

Did you readjust the rockers? Surprising how many people pull a Mini head off and throw it back on without doing it. They must think they have an EH-on Holden, with hydraulic lifters...

thanks, i'm a diesel marine machanic, so i know my basics. i do my valve clearances when each piston comes to TDC compression stroke and do the clearances on both inlet and exhaust for the piston. i have always done this and had no problems, i bought a cheap VRS head gasket set. should i change to head gasket to a cooper one. the one in the kit seem'd to be a paper type (lookd like carboard). i would use it for a customers boat but my local mini shop said it shouldn't have any problems. i fitted all the valves with teflon lube and new stem seals. the guides lookd great. not much wear.

the sound is coming from the back of the engine. where the lifter covers are.

I wonder if a pushrod is rubbing against the headgasket? Sometimes they overlap the holes.

i will pull the head back off tomorrow and have a look. that could be the problem.

Take the rocker cover off and see if one pushrod is rubbing as you turn it over. You could also remove the pushrods and see if there is a mark.

:? I am asuming that you adjust t h e rockers in t he theory of 9's?
Also it could be a pushrod sticking to t h e ball of the rocker arm, or t h e fan tapping t h e radiator shroud/cowling (whatever you want to call it) or if you have a breather off t h e timing case and you have put in a double row chain from a single chain the cam gear nut may be tapping on the timing case.......if this is the case you may need to remove t h e timing case and make some adjustments with a "knock-o-meter". It could also be t h e fan toucking the breather off t h e timing caseso it will need adjusting too using t h e same "tool" but you can do that in t h e car.

:x this "the" thing is really $hitting me!!!! as i dont want tio seem like a dumbarse with my spelling!!!!

dont do that untill you've got the ol' screw driver onto the timing case and had a listen (unless you have a stethoscope) as well as other bits of the engine.
