Hi All I'm trying to start a 78 clubman that has been sitting around in the previous owners garage for about 2 years. Electrics seem ok, its turning over fine but it wont kick over and start. It seems like the fuel is not getting to the chambers for some reason. I can make it kick a bit by squirting fuel into the air intake and by putting it straight into the chambers. But it just turns over and over with out intervention. I can see that the fuel gets up to just before the carby (thanks to a clear fuel filter) but i'm not sure if is getting any further. Looks like i am going to have to open her up and have a look Can any of you wise sages tell me what i should be looking for (Fairly new to cars...geek by trade) Cheers Adrian *I had a problem before with a blocked pipe in the fuel tank which i eventually sorted (with acid in the end) but think thats ok now. |

I would almost bet that it is not getting fuel into the floatbowl. On an SU carby you will find a bowl/chamber where the fuel goes in. Take off the lid (3 screws) and check for fuel/water/dirt/hornets nest/etc. Fill about half way with fresh fuel. Check under the lid of the bowl and make sure the float valve is not stuck. Refit the lid and try again. |

if that doesn't work, do wat i did and buy a can of Start Ya' Bastard! and spray the hell out of the filter and a little into the float..... its essentially a can of Ether in spray form... its great.... but then again dont really know alot else..... im gonna be rebuilding a HS6 on teh weekend (thanks Pristic...) My 2c oh, heres wat teh can looks like, great stuff i say!

I had a simmilar issue, In the end the mechanich took the carby off, cleaned it and found a pipe was leaking |

Also if you have compressed air, take off the dashpot, take out the spring, piston and needle assembly and blow back through the mainjet. Have the lid off the float bowl with a rag over the top so you dont get a face full of fuel. It should empty the float bowl very quickly. If it doesnt you have a blocked mainjet. Also while you have it apart put some new ATF or if you have the SU stuff in the damper. Matt |
