I'm looking at mags for my project van and I have been thinking 13x7 inch superlights. Asking around the tyre shops, finding a tyre to suit (195/50ish/13) is proving rarer than hens teeth  . Also I'm pretty sure their too big (7 inch wide) to be legal anyway :?
What I want to know is who is planing on using mags this size (I know theirs a couple of yous) what tyres are you using and what about legalities?
Any info would be appreciated weather your in the tyre industry or what ever...

Kenno,

You're up too late! Go to bed!

13 x 7 Superheavies with Dunlop SP 9000 in 195/45R13

And compared to the original Contessas on the car:

On The Cat with the Zeemax kit test-fitted - no problem:

I know there are tyres about that fit em, because there all the rage in the UK. Not too sure on the legal aspects though. You could try Steve at Brickworx, as I believe he brings in some unusal tyre sizes for mini's.

Check out MiniSport as well. They have them for sale with tyres and also sell the tyres to suit by themselves, from memory.

I'm going to need 12" or bigger for the brakes I want to run. There's a bigger market for 13" wheels so I'm going the 13's.

Maybe so, but that's not necessarily the case with the tyres.

Tyres are not the problem, Australina ADS's stat that they must not protrude outside the extremities of the vehicle, so you just have to cover them with a good set of flares, mine are suspect legal, but I am prepared to talk my way out of it, if the wollopers want to have a chat with me.

BullS%#& baffles brains.

I meant tyres :) Geez, if there were some awesome, readily available 12" tyres, I'd rather the 12's :?

I used to know all the measurements, but it's something like the vehicle track can't be extended by more than 25mm or wheel size bigger than 2" over standard, etc. I do know that technically 13x7's are illegal if they're not engineered.

My arguement is that the Rover Sportspacks came out with 13's and they didn't change the suspension or hub arrangement so what's the dif?

The difference is, Rover Sportspacks were not an Australian model so you can't use that as a model to refer to, they don't exist as far as RTA etc are concerned..
You could argue using Cooper S and Clubby GT track and go 1" up from there, beyond that they can ping you if it's not engineered.

From what I've found out Dunlop SP9000 have been discontinued :x I asked minisport in Oz and there completely out same with the UK mini suppliers so unless Dunlop start making them again the SP9000's are dead :( . As far as I know.
Yokohama make some 215's and stuff but being yoke's they'll need replacing after a spirited drive in to town and back   .

Tricky, are they legal or are you getting them engineered?

With the UK guys and their 13x7's they use 175 tyres which is an illegal combo here

That's what I was told as well, however what size wheels did the mokes come out with...could you argue that the bearings and tracking are the same as whats in the minis? If that's correct in theory you could use 13" wheels but was their anything in Oz with 6" wide rims from the factory :? ?
Something a couple of yous have mentioned is "engineered" if I got some 13x7's with 195 tyres and an engineer said they were ok would they pass a roadworthy?

If an engineer certifies them, all's good.

I know they didn't come here, I think it would be a pretty strong arguement if the engineer had any quams about it though... Same hubs, bearings, whatever and they can obviously handle it...

Engineered solution Kenno.

Passing it by my Engineer and he's saying its all good! Basically, he is saying we can 'lean' on what the evolutionary path was in the UK with Rovers going to 13x6 in the Sportspack Coopers etc. Basically same car, same build methodology, components etc.

With regards to Dunlop SP9000's (absolutely awesome tyre BTW!), I am not sure whether they have been discontinued by Dunlop altogether, or just not imported into Australia anymore. If they have stopped importing them, then they may be able to be sourced from Japan direct.

Still doesn't make it any easier for me to find tyres :( but dose solve the legalities of the 13x7's :)

P.S. I just sent an e-mail to Dunlop asking about the SP9000's or anything they would have that would suit (13x7 inch mag, 40-55 tread depth). I'll keep yous posted.

The '45' in 195/45R13 is the aspect ratio.

Its width over height of the tyre, nothing to do with tread depth.

As in the SP9000, the height of the tyre from the bead to the top is 45% of the width.

A standard 185/70R15 tyre for say a Commodore, has an aspect ratio of 70% which means the height of the tyre is 70% of the width - i.e. larger sidewall.

Cheers,
Tricky

There are good tyres in 12's, Dunlop D01J's, still havn't actually used mine yet, as the car is not built, but they are available in aus 165/55/R12. Many have said good things about these tyres.
