im going for blue slip next week, 2 things that will knock me back is that its 86mm off the ground and its untidy, pull up round the corner and wipe the sump off after you drive and then continue to the blu slipper,

Hey Guys Picked myself up a great buy o the weekend. 67 Deluxe. One owner since new with all the paper work. Will submit photos once i pick it up. Had a few questions for the NSW guys out there. 1) Can i drive the car with traffic plates to get it back to my place or do i need a 1 day pass from the RTA? 2) What do they look for with blue slips? 3) I know rust is something they look for and to be honest i'm very fortunate that this little guy doesnt have any VISIBLE rust. I do have 1 or 2 Tea Stain rust. Any suggestions on how to cover it up for the time? Ultimate goal is to get the car resprayed again but for the time being just want to pass blue slip. Thanks in advance ladies and gents. |

Dont drive it - just dont go there - You havn't told us very much about the car itself but if its been standing for a will you can almost guarrantee the brake and clutch hydraulics are stuffed and its only the first time you do a big stomp that you will find out. The radiator is probably fill of crap and you don't need to cook the motor on the way home. Beg, borrow or steal a trailer to bring it home - tie it down with chains, not pissy bits of rope or cheap tie down straps - a car walking off the back of a car trailer is a deadly missile. Don't hire a trailer though - its actually cheaper to get a tilt tray truck to pick it and delver it than to hire a trailer for this sort of one-off. Now the law - the law says you can drive an unregistered vehicle from your home to a authorised inspection place or to a recognised place of repair ie - a licenced mechanic or similar. You cannot just put traffic plates on a car and drive it. Blue slips - blue slips are actually no worse than a pink slip except that a bit more attention is paid to the identifcation of the vehicle. The vehicle needs to clean and tidy and well presented - a shoddy looking vehicle attracts further attention and inspection. It needs to be roadworthy - it needs to be right and safe to beon the road for both the driver and any passengers and also other road users. They will check it for the same issues as they do for your pink slip Most common area of failure for a mini (after stupid owners not checking for blown light bulbs) is oil leaks - Mostly this is just an engine that has 30 years of grease, oil and crap all over it. Beg, borrow, hire or steal a Karcher and give the underbody and the engine a thorough clean. If iit drips oil on the ground after the clean then you will have to fix the oil leak. Rust - well the car has to be right - it has to be safe. Tea stain rust - polish it out with a cutting compound. The car may go up on a hoist and they may tap on the floor with a sharp probe to see if the floor is paper thin. If they find holes (or make them) then you must fix the rust. Mike |

Haven't done one for a while but basically the Pink Slip tests "roadworthiness" and the Blue slip checks "identity". Some pink slip shops have an extended authority to do blues as well. If not, you need to get the pink first at one shop then down the road for the blue. You don't need any authorisation to drive an "unregistered" car to a place of repair or registration. However, you do need a permit to drive a vehicle with "expired" registration. Go figure.... Cheers, Ian |

A blue slip overrides a pink slip, it negates the need for a pink slip because it is effectively a pink slip x100 harder! |

Cheers, Ian No - thats not right - a blue slip is a roadworthy test combined with an indentity check. It has to be performed by an authorised blue slip inspector (who is usually a a pink slipper as well). A pink slip costs about $30 and a blue slip costs about $40. You do not get a pink slip and then a blue slip. To get a unregistered permit to drive you need to get a pink slip - yes its a go figure but it does ensure that the unregistered vehcle is roadworthy. Although it covers cars it also designed to cover quad bikes, tractors and other vehicles not normally on the road. Mike |

Expanding on from what Mike has said, You can drive an unregistered vehicle for the purposes of obtaining registration. This may include going to an insurer to collect a greenslip, attending a mechanic to have a pink/ blueslip done, attending an auto elec etc. I would forget the "Traffic" number plates as they will only draw attention to yourself and serve no other purpose. To obtain an "Unregistered Vehicles Permit" from the RTA you will need to have a pink slip done "For Permit Only" so if your cars not up to spec dont bother. As mike said, don't take the risk, hire, borrow a trailer or organise a tow. Unregistered Fine = $481, Uninsured $481 + other goodies far exceeds the cost of trailer hire or a tow. dtorreal wrote: 2) What do they look for with blue slips? I agree 100% with everything you said, presentation is everything, if you present the car looking like a bomb, the blue slip inspector will look hard at it, present it looking like a glamour & he might be more leanient.
