Post subject:  New Motor Won't start. Starts now (Update p3)

Hello Ausmini!

I have a nice new Motor in the Nb Mini (Animal). It was built and assembled etc a few years ago.

45 Webber
1293cc
Really nice spec. (thanks Ty)

I have oil pressure, I have Fuel to the carby and visibly going into the cylinders, I have spark, The ignition timing is 100% correct.

It won't fire though. Fresh Fuel (100 octane AVGAS) went in not long before the 'key' was turned.

Any ideas? I won't get to look at it again till at least this weekend, maybe longer. Just need some ideas on what to try next time I can get to it.

Thanks
Matthew

Further to what Gadget's mentioned, check that the distributor drive shaft is in the correct spot, and maybe also check that the timing sprockets are properly lined up.

Has it been started since it was rebuilt ? Check the plugs to make sure they haven't corroded and giving a weak spark , also check the sparks are right for the compression and fuel . All the normal things like wires plugged in and connectors not corroded as well , otherwise we're all in the dark with it .

It took me a new coil and half a can of WD40 down the carb to coax an engine of mine out of hibernation.

got the correct plugs? Fred starts his engines using different plugs to the ones he uses to race with

Yep, did that on the road mini a couple of years ago, this time I know they are right!!

Checked the dissy shaft is the right way around, is always a good idea.

Hmm, Haven't checked the cam timing properly yet, good idea, will do that first next time i see it!! (looked ok, but will go through and check carefully if you know what I mean!)

Never started, brand new plugs, correct heat range (for starting, different for racing) New leads, new coil, new (charged) battery.

Compression ratio is close to 13:1, so avgas is the requitrement, these plugs are the same as a lot of historic racers use in their minis.

A question though, what gap should the plugs have? (points ignition, GT40 coil)

Thanks,

Matt

the s/plug gap i use for most high comp points dissy motors is .8 mm - .9mm........but they dont run avgas (nice smell once combusted).....you sure its not flooding as well as timing being slightly out??

If you have enough fuel and you have enough spark.all you are missing is air. Is the carb opening suitably with the throttle so its not too rich.

Hi Ty, sorry, missed that reply while typing mine. Yep, using different plugs for starting. Same as Fred and Ken and others too so should be right for plugs. Just got to confirm the plug gap now.

Cheers
Matt

Don't think it was flooding. Timing hasn't been set with a timing light yet, (naturally) but static timing is spot on. Cam timing should be OK as Fred Sayers built the engine, but i will triple check it just to be 110% positive.

Hmm, what's 0.8mm to 0.9mm in mini speak?

Thanks, matt

Hi BIAM,

Throttle butterfly's are opening beautifully.

Could it be I am not familiar with the technique for starting a mini with a Webber?

If it's any help, my approach for starting my weber equipped mini is a couple of half throttle pumps to richen it up, then crank it with only a very light throttle application (almost no throttle pressure).

Try turning the dizzy this way, thata way whilst cranking over (use gloves!). If the engine kicks, you have spark at the plugs, juice and air (maybe not necessarily correct mixture). Sometimes I've found relying on static timing dodgy after a rebuild.

Thanks KB,

I shall try that way. (And sorry for mis-spelling Weber  ) I think a bigger battery to keep it cranking will help. It only has a little odyssey at the moment. Nice and light for racing, with a high CCA for the first few seconds. Dies down pretty quick though.

Cheers
