Post subject:  Mini movies

Andrew(Andbat) has been introducing me to the wonderful world of old car movies, as I am relatively new to all things mini and all things classic. So far i have watched "Running on empty" last week and this week I watched "Good By Pork Pie". I must say I have enjoyed the films a lot. Cars, babes, "zaney" Haircuts. What more is there??

Well just thought Id share.

If there is any other movies that I should watch please feel free to start listing.

Cheers

Brendan

Goodbye Pork Pie, a NZ road movie and the best Mini movie ever made - hands down. The car is central to the entire movie. For some reason the pic has been flipped. Great stunts and great fun - essential watching for any mini fan.

Get the 2 disc collectors' edition as it has a fascinating interview with Geoff Murphy, the director. It's apparently a biblical tale...

Of course, the original Italian Job is an all time Mini classic... 8)
As distinct from the 2nd one, which IMO is just a marketing tool for BMW.

So I guess that means the Brazilian Job will use new Clubmans, in another marketing thingy.

For my money, two of the best classic racing films (nothing to do with Minis) are Grand Prix (1966 - James Garner) and Le Mans (1970 - Steve McQueen). Winning (1969 - Paul Newman) is also quite good, though more of a love story, and has one small scene with a Mini in it.

If you are looking for good car chases, naturally you can't go past the previous mentioned films - Goodbye Pork Pie (and yes, we do sell it) and the Italian Job (both versions - very different, but I do like the car chase in the second one as well), but some of the all-time great car chases, in no particular order, are to be found in Bullet (regarded as the most iconic car chase film of all time by most critics), The Bourne Identity (featuring a Mini having its neck well and truly wrung) and Running Scared (a great scene in the car chase on Chicago's elevated railway).

The original 1960s Gone In 60 Seconds is a cult classic, and the recent remake is not too bad, though typically over-the-top Hollywood these days.

Rikky & Pete, (an Aussie film but only available at the moment through the US - get it on line through Amazon.com) is an interesting road-trip film, featuring over 20 Mokes in the final scene, and another Moke at the start and in a few places through the film. I loved the evangalist with the old Renault.

The World's Fastest Indian from New Zealand is much more recent, but will no doubt go down as one of the all-time great car/bike films, as well as being a bloody good film in its own right.

From more of an Aussie perspective, check out the 1970s cult classic The Cars That Ate Paris, and of course the original Mad Max. Mad Max 2 is good as well, but the original is the true classic.

For something completely different, check out Go Trabi Go a German film about a family from Eastern Germany going on their very first holiday in the West, after the fall of the Berlin Wall. Germany's answer to Goodbye Pork Pie.

If you want more, and you've got plenty of time (because you will easily get hooked and spend hours searching) check out the website www.imcdb.org to find just about any car in any movie.

Have Fun! :D

Cheers,
Watto.

There is a film out there i've seen once. Not sure what its called, but its a bloke flying through the streets of paris in a ferrari i think. Car sounds awesome. I'm pretty sure its banned in some countries.

The film is called Rendesvous and you can get it from The Pitstop Bookshop in Perth. Not sure how much it is, but it's about the most expensive 7min (or so) of film around - with the possible exception of Sky Dance - Ari Vaatanen (spelling?) flying up Pykes Peak Hillclimb in the US - I reckon the single most exciting piece of driving I've ever seen on film.

Cheers,
Watto.

Climb Dance is the Pykes Peak vid with Ari Vaatenen in a Peugeot 405T16. Set the record which upset the Yanks no end. They then sealed the track so they could reclaim the record from the French.
Have to agree with Watto, Le Mans and GP are great. Rendezvous is amazing. Google it to find out the real story. Seems the Director was the driver, though many people speculate it was a famous F1 driver. Interesting read all the same.
Bullit on a big screen (projector) will make you lift out of your seat.

And, don't forget Tribute to Fangio - a must have.

But what about the 30's Amilcar in Monsieur Hulot's Holiday by Jacques Tati (and Traffic by the same director, not the later American film)?

The best Mini films:
Italian Job (original) and Tap Dance (I think that's what it's called) with great footwork shots of Rauno Aaltonen at the wheel of a works Cooper S. I have it on tape somewhere.

Have to get Goodbye pork Pie!!!!!!

I have always thought that Rendezvous was rubbish. It is just a trick that because the camera is mounted low that the car looks fast. It is not going very fast most of the time. The way that it overtakes a 2CV you can tell that it is doing about 80kph even though the sound makes it seem like it is doing 200.
The camera car turned out to be a big Mercedes sedan and not the Ferrari that it was rumored to be for so long.
