Hi All, Does anyone know what these number mean that are printed on the subframes i have. i have been told when i bought a bunch of mini parts that some of the subframes below were from a cooperS. does any one know what these numbers mean? and the little yellow and blue stars? I am hoping that the hyrdro sacks are cooperS and can be used on my cooperS. they dont have any paint on them tho 21A15SS?? FAM 1015?? 21A215? and a frant subfame with a red 5 and a couple of red stripes??

Are you sure their not military based   I think Watto needs to look at these

Saloon subframes were not model specific, its only the hydro units that make the difference. 21A15SS?? Should be read as 21A 1588 which is a hydro rear subframe FAM 1015?? Looks like FAM 1014 to me - a much later part number. 21A215? Looks like it might be missing a digit but can't find any reference to a subframe part number with the digits quoted. |

and the orange Paint?? I have some orange paint on my Clubman subframes. Any idea what that means?? |

Mowog is commonly seen on subframes, but most the subframes that pass my way have been mostly overpainted a couple of times these days... No difference in the subframes between Cooper and otherwise, but the hydrolastic bags will have different numbers on them. These will have to be removed and carefully inspected for the part numbers and/or paint marks to denote their origin. There's different part numbers and colours for different periods of hydro bags, it gets quite confusing. There is a pretty good thread on this subject somewhere... |

Thanks 776vde, your right it is a 88 not a SS SS just sounds more sexy 
The plan is to strip them down and pick out 2 sets for blast and powder coating. I bet no matter how much research i do i end up with differant hydro bags on each corner of my cooper S :-S LOL great for right hand turns type setup....

Funny thing...I just took off my rear subframe this morning and noticed the same thing, says 21A2103. And you can't see it in the pic but it's got a yellow star in a circle. For info, this subframe is from a 1973 panelvan and considering the amount of grime on parts looks like it's never been off the car.

my morris 850 has the part number 21A2163 on it. it is definitly original to that car. does this help |

This is touching on the pedantics letter in The Mini Experience with someone writing in to point out a mini had the wrong hose clamps etc . There is only so much you can do when doing a restoration to get it original and there will still be someone that will pick it apart . If you have the subframes out and are painting them or you want a really accurate restoration then it wouldn't hurt to put the original part numbers on them . Mind you , I know how bad BMC and later Leyland were at consistency with cars so all subframes may or may not have come out with painted parts numbers to start with . Best to find an unrestored example of the same year as your resto and see if the numbers are on the subframe and then decide accordingly . It's your restoration so you can decide the level of accuracy you're happy with . |
