Ok i need to know a foe thing about my engine.

First here is the number 99HE22106***

Can anyone tell me if this engine got flat top piston, and does anyone know what the compression shoul be in this engine.....

Unless the head is off its hard to tell if it has flat top pistons or not. They were not fitted in any stock motor by the factory.

A relatively easy way is to take the spark plugs out and then by hand turn the motor until the number one piston's rocker gear begins to rocker. Ie number one piston is in top dead centre and the valves are beginning to move - one has just closed and the other is about to open.

Now - get a long bladed screw driver and stick it in the plug hole to the top of the piston. Move it around - you will feel the dished top if it is not a flat top. Conversely if it is a flat top it will feel smooth right across its surface.

That number sounds like a Rover 998A+? Yes the late Rover ones were 10.3:1 and had flat top pistons stock. And press fitted gudgeon pins too.

Thanks for the compression tips, but according to the book i have here this number is one of the only one to have diched piston, can anyone confirmed.....or ...i will take the head off

Oh and yes it's a Rover and according to Calver it's the only Rover with dich piston :? :?

Try the long bladed screwdriver method before you lift off the head.

Grab a spare dash globe (the small ones used in clubman dashs with the plastic cup) and a length of speaker wire.

Take the plastic cup off the globe and you will see two legs, attach these to the wire and wrap with electrical tape. Make sure you wrap tightly so they don't come apart but don't use too much as the next step won't work.

Feed the globe down the sparkplug hole/s and switch on by wiring to the + side of the starter solenoid and - to anywhere on the engine.

You will be able to see quite a bit inside the cylinder and depending where the piston is you should be able to tell what type they are.
