Depends on what the machine shop charge like. Last one i got done cost me $80NZ cash under the table. But if you are going to put a diffrent cap(s) in you have to do it anyway

I would have said about $80 also. But wait until you have a few machine shop type jobs first. Like, chemical clean, a mica then rebore and further wallet emptying procedures.

mine cost $130 inc GST

line boring is not that easy to get done a a general machine shop these days. I found that when 2 of the places GR recommended told me that they had sold their line boring equipment because there was not enough work in it any more.

that was weird, because the guy i finally got to do it was only doing line boring. Almost all his work was redoing taxi engines. Imagine a workshop full of falcon blocks and heads-he also line bored the camshaft bearings on repaired heads. he is in sydney so not much use to you.

cheers

Is it only me that finds it really strange - and pretty unacceptable - that any reputable machine shop would accept a job to line bore an engine and not at least query the fact that a main bearing cap was missing?? Who would take money to do 2/3rds of a job?

Cheers, Ian

Ask the mini dealers, such as Link, Tovan Auto (Seaford) or Lyndsay Siebler who they would recommend.

Could try Motor Improvements in St Kilda, think it may be still owned by Brian Sampsom (remember him?) I've had mini engine work done there before.

I don't think he's had it done yet, he's after a price to do it if/when he finds another bearing cap.

thats spot on. i just picked up a whole buch of stuff very cheap on ebay including some 1275 cranks and an 1100s block that has standard bores. i am in no hurry to use the block at the moment but figured that because it was so cheap i could afford to probably get it line bored and i would still be doing ok. i just need a cap for it. will any 1275 cap fit or does it have to be specifically an 1100s item?

Any A series 1275 cap (except S) can be made to fit- there are 2 different location dowel sizes- early and late.
If the cap you find has dowels that don't match the block, send me the cap and I'll make you some stepped dowels cheap. I made a bunch for justminis a while back.
