Post subject:  Oil change - what's this
I was doing the oil change on Ribena yesterday and this was stuck to the magnetic sump plug

It looks like a circlip from the side of one of the pistons -keeps the gudgeon pin in place.

Number one piston oils up the spark plug pretty quick but what's the worse that could happen assuming this is where it's from.....scoring of the bore??

Compression test shows all 4 cylinders are up around the 160 to 170.

What do you think.

It looks like a gudgeon pin circlip, but could also the gearbox outrigger bearing circlip - though that is less likely.

Looks identical to the ones I pulled out of my old pistons recently...

I'm not familiar with the intricacies of the gearbox, so I don't know of any circlips in there...

Someone else want to confirm?

Looks a bit big for a gudgeon pin one- they are only 5/8" and used on smallbores only. My bet is the idler gear bearing one from the case, it doesn't do much- the bearings are as `tight as' in there.

Here's another pic and the good Doc is right again (top[ of the class...as per usual). The circlip on the right is from an old set of pistons and as you can see, the two are completely different - So, it's got to be from the gearbox somewhere.

Forgot to say that stuck in with all the usual bits and pieces stuck to the sump plug was the remains of one of the rubber valve stem seals. Could be from Number 1 which is why I'm going through the oil and spark plugs in number one cylinder. Better take the head off soon and do some investigations.

It was a bit mangled :lol: 3 or 4 pieces but you could tell what it was

I agree with the Doc, I also think it is from the gearbox idler gear.

its the circlip for the drop gear bearing. there are two, one on each side of the bearing to hold it into place. I just replaced this bearing and it looks to fit the bill. :cry: It may or may not become and issue....
