Post subject:  Radiators clogged from acid dip?

Just dropped off my radiator and heater for a flush. i was convinced that they clogged because i never got the 40 year old heater flushed. i told that to the guy down there and he said its more likely from the engine. i told him it was all acid dipped when i did the rebuild in 06 he said thats more likely to dislodge bits over time.????????? has anyone else experienced this? hes suggested a small filter sock for the top of the radiator ill give it a shot see how it goes. has anyone else experienced this or have suggestions this is my 3rd radiator flush.

I had my block acid dipped etc (and the radiator overhauled) at rebuild time, and even though it looked as clean as there was still lots of sediment that loosened up and dirtied the water up after a short time running, including some bits of scale. So I did another flush and all is good now.
I should have listened to my mechanic though - he suggested putting some stocking material over the end of the top or bottom hose (can't remember which) and all I could find in the mrs' "smalls" drawer was fish nets - ha ha ha - and they are no good as sieves

When you get the block dipped, it loosens all the crap that is barely clinging to the walls of the block, but that doesn't mean it takes them out.

While the front of the block is easily accessed and cleaned through the water pump hole and the welsh plugs, between the cylinders and the back of the block is another matter. It takes ages to get in here and get all the crap out with no way of knowing if you got the last of the chunks out.

I wash this out myself when I get the block home and spend ages making sure the bits are all gone as much as I can, and then pull a little bit of stocking over the top hose inlet to the radiator once the engine is back together to catch the last few bits. I stuff it a little way down the pipe to make a bit of a sock before putting the hose back over. If you use plain water for the first couple of thousand, it makes it easy to drain and refill it a couple of times cleaning the stocking as you go.
