My Rover won't go. ![]() My wife was driving it the other day and said it was backfiring and missing. So she pulled over and rang the RACV. The lovely man says it was the coil. So she got it towed to her parents house in Geelong. ![]() So I go all the way to Geelong armed with a new coil. I install new coil and the car runs beautifully...... For all of 2 minutes. Now it won't go. I din't have a multimeter or spanners or anything, but I decided to get a new distributer cap and leads as they appear to be the originals and have done 120,000+ km's. I think this will help but do not believe this to be the underlying reason. Has anyone had any issues like this with a Rover before? Is it possible it is the immobiliser or something else? Cheers. |

If its SPi check the hoses on the back of the throttle body down near the bottom of it. There are two hoses. Both are "L" shaped where they plug onto the throttle body. They are probably 3mm in diameter and made of a harder type plastic/rubber. One hose is about 7cm long and goes to a small black container, then off to the MAP sensor. This hose is on your left if you are standing at the front of the engine bay looking at the car. It is possible that this hose has split or come off at the throttle body, the smallest leak will make your car run like crap. It happened to mine. All you need to do is take off the air filter housing (3 screws and 4 clips), be careful not to pull on any of the hoses that are plugged into the housing. Make sure you carefully disconnect them and note where to plug them back in. This will give you easier access to the hose that you need to check. If the hose is split, you can replace it with a hose that is of the exact same diameter, or as close to it as you can find. Too big makes it run weird for some reason. If you need pics, let me know and I will take some of each step. If it isn't SPi, then I dont have a clue ![]() |

This is how your engine bay should roughly look like. ![]() This is the air filter housing cover removed. Note the 3 screws and 4 clips. ![]() The engine bay with the air filter cover removed. ![]() What you get when you lift up the entire air filter housing. Note the green plug and red hose. Igmore the yellow one. Unplug the green plug, and leave the red hose in. Follow the red hose to the end at the throttle body. You want to check the short hose which is to the left of it on the throttle body. ![]() When you unplug the green plug, you can then sit the hosuing over here. ![]() Should have something like this in front of you. ![]() See this little black container ? The hose on the right goes to the throttle body, the one on the left goes to the map sensor. The hose that goes to the throttle body is about 10cm long at the most, both its ends are a rubber "L". There L joins can split right up to where its a right angle. I don't think they like the heat back behind there and overtime just get weak. ![]() The ends of the hoses that attach to the throttle body are down behind here.... ![]() Same view, but a bit further back to give you some reference points. ![]() THIS is the hose you want to check out. This is THE hose I had on my rover, you can see the split on the left hand end. ![]() (I now know "Sensor of some sort" is the MAP sensor....which is kinda important to the whole engine running properly, lol) Check the short black hose really well. The smallest crack/split will make the car run like crap and go through a heap of fuel. Hope this helps someone!!! I'd have loved to have this when my Rover decided to annoy me! |

If you mean what do you do with the hose if it is split ? If its split, replace it. You don't need to replace it with that exact hose, you can get something that is a similar inside diameter. As close as possible is best. If it isn't split, keep looking for the source of the problem. Another possible one is a faulty o2 sensor, or leak at the exhaust manifold flange. |

You can block off the red vac line. This is what they do when they fit after market air filters. You can't block off the black one. The black one is the one that feeds the MAP sensor. Dave, what's the car doing or not doing now? Does it turn over at all? Can you hear the fuel pump when you turn the key? |
