You would be lucky to have 18 true hp at the front wheels.

power is plenty to get up hills if the rings are ok

original weight is more like 600kg. there is absolutely nothing in them. windy windows and other stuff make deluxe/cooper etc about 630kg. my mini minor was always 630kg on the rego cert.

My 1275LS was 660kg on the rego papers.
My Cooper S was 660kg on the rego papers.

Maybe the RTA can't tell the difference!

its the heater, the boot board, extra tank, hydrolastic (hell there must be 20kg fluid there!) for the cooper s

fancy high back seats, dash, belts and pollution gear for the LS

that's what i reckon anyway

bhp = hp .... one and the same.

Yeah its still good usable power....... With 18HP at the wheels, my old 850 still hit 90MPH (thats off the clock 8) ) Gotta be happy with that.

At the end of the day, its all about the power to weight ratio.

A tuned 1275cc mini (610kg with 100hp) has the same power to weight ratio as the current model 5.7Litre Commodore (1654kg with 335hp) ..... both need to push 6.1kg per HP. Its the amount of torque produced that makes the difference.

MY question would be ...how much PS would that be? All these Jap cars are getting rated in PS now...... Im guessing thats different to HP :? What's the HP -> PS conversion formula?

Multipy the horsepower by 1.0141685309470546 to get PS (Pferdestärke).
It's apprently metric, but so close to HP that you gotta wonder why they bother.

yeah ok then, well im going to rebuild a 850, and just wanted it to have a bit more torque, low end torque say 1500-3000 rpm, within the engine would creating more torque be helped by changing the cam to a more "lumpier" profie. ? also i was thinking of fitting dual SU carbs ? is there n e thing better than the su carbs for enhancing the engine ?

regards steve

i have a 850 that i am about to rebuild as well. Biggest problem you will have is getting rings and pistons. especially if you need to bore it out. If you are going to get a few blocks, use the one that does not need a rebore so you can stick to the original pistons, Karcraft still has standard rings available. Otherwise you might have to creative and start looking at other pistons.

biggest help for torque will be extractor exhaust, which you can get complete for a few hundred bucks. then if you get a head like a 12g202, the flow in the ports will be freed up immensly, but you have to skim it to get the compression ratio back. 12g295 head is probably overkill for 850, but it all depends on what you want. Twin SUs will only be worth it if you get the head and cam changed IMO, but are good for bling factor. Apparently the 850 sports had twin 1" sus, and extractors, normal cam and claimed 40hp. That is almost 25% increase. You could probably still get that with a single 1.25" su.

the previous owner of my 850 claimed that the cam was reground to "997 cooper" spec. When i start to pull it apart i'll measure the thing to see if that is correct. The rings were absolutey rooted, so i can't comment on how much improvement it made over standard.

The vizard book has some great stuff about modifying the 850, but is typical of the attitude that still prevails -i.e. why waste your time with an 850 engine when you can modify a 998, 1098 or 1275 ... as a consequence the supply of parts for 850s is almost non existent. Having said that he gives all the details on what is possible. The biggest limitation to a modified 850 is the pistons. He reckons 5500 rpm is about it for standard pistons (from memory). the cranks are not as strong as other engine sizes either so that is another limitation.

good luck with trying something different tho

michael
