Interesting that the pic of the number on the block seems to show just the 4 digits - maybe the original stamping was lost when/if the block had been planed, and re-stamped incorrectly?

Nah - still only 4 digits after the Y - should be 5. Or am I going blind?

Should be 5 digits , its been re-stamped , also has the wrong type of font for the letters and numbers , and is missing the spacing slash between the letters ie : 9F / XE / Y

Yep - just went and checked mine and the font is quite different. So there's a good chance that this one either
1. has been stamped incorrectly in error after skimming (and there are signs in the pic that there has been some skimming/filing?)
2. is not the right block, and in an attempt to make it look like one, been stamped wrongly.

and you can see the previous numbers faintly....maybe it was done by an engine reco place and they cocked it up

Could be a dodgy no restamp, the surface isn't a nice flat surface grind or milled finish.

Hmmmmm when you play around in Photoshop there is a 2 under the F and the x looks like it has been placed over a / as there appears to be more of the / below and in line with the / part of the x - if you get my drift. Also appears to be a 9 under the 9 - all the faint numbers are half the size of the clear numbers

Not that it'd definitive for date but is the block a thin or thick flange.
Number looks to me like it could have been a Mk1 block, overstamped as a Mk2.

Nothing at all wrong with a 12G1316... as long as you don't pretend it's a kosher S one.8)

True - just pointing it out as even if the block had a police number, it could still be an S. The head definately isn't though and it seems odd to me...not that I really care either lol

I don't think that it is a Cooper S block at all.

I would want to have a good look at it before passing judgement but I am very doubtful about the engine. I think the car is the real deal but the engine looks wrong.
