Hi all.
Just a quick question.
I lost 2nd and 4th in my 850 on the way home from work just now.
It's too hot outside to have a look now but tonight when I check it out what should I be looking for?
To let you know, it's got a magic wand and reverse still works (it does hit the floor as per usual)
but has been getting harder to find each day.
She's an old girl and has probably never had a spanner on the cog box at all.
Any suggestions guys?

Have you got any thick carpet that might have moved forward and blocked the hole ? What's your passenger side engine mount like , could it have failed and moved the left side of the engine back a bit making the gear lever hit thebodywork ? Take the boot off and see if there's anything fallen in between the lever where it goes into the housing and the body etc . At this stage look towards something fouling the lever before internal problems .

You should put your heart & soul into everything you do.

Just had a look and Miniman your spot on.
Under about an inch of grease and crud I could see the linkage moving about a 1/4 of a turn on the shaft going into the gearbox
before it starts to rotate it.
I hope the spline is OK.
It looks like it's going to be a bugger of a job if the spline is worn!
Is this a common thing?

If the spline on the shaft going down into the gearbox is bad, it's an engine out job to change it.
But...
Over the years I have welded a few of the ball levers onto the shaft in situ, it works fine and you can still get the box apart whenever you need to.
Just watch out for the fire hazards in there- I would remove the carby and block the pipe on the mech fuel pump, then cover the pump with wet rags.
And keep a hose or bucket handy.

Sounds a bit agricultural.
It would definitely work and get me out of trouble not to mention saving a lot of mucking around pulling everything down.
I may well go down this path if need be just to keep me going in the short term because the 850 is going into dry dock
for a while as soon as my van is finished.

I also have the same problem and will be looking into it today. I'll get back to you. As drmini knows our Gear stick is like a table spoon in a tea cup and it seems to stem from thier and both the bolts are tight

Not hard to weld it in there, easiest way is use a stick welder, and bend the electrode. Mind you, I'm a welder...
And unlike small MIG welder cocky crap, it will be strong.

okay mine is done. Get some one into wiggle the gear stick and see whats doing with the change & Controle shaft levers found next to the exhaust on the rad side behind the block.

i was able to get the male only control shaft lever from Karcraft. You will need a 1/2" ring spanner and take both the bolts off to get the shafts off. Dont just loosen them as they want come off trustme i was the dope. Clean out the inside of the female and feel if thier is a ridge (which I have) and repack with greace.
getting them back on is a little bit fiddley as they fit on the spile but the bolt has to also pase by the spline so they are located properly. I also put another washer on the bolt as i believe mine was bottoming out and do them up as tight as you can. Get your freind again to wigle the gear stick again and watch what they are doing.

My remote control shaft has play so I am getting play here but its much better than it was before.

And make sure the engine is cold when doing this otherwise you are going to burn yourself

they do seem to like coming undone, I found mine a bit loose when I took the motor out last week.... just check the bolts before you weld anything!

Poor old Lou has been sitting under the peppercorn tree out back since my last post.
I went to drive him into the shed last night and now I can't get any gear!
I was going to drive down to the local car wash and get rid of the crud where I'd be working but, it's too far to push it now!!
Now where's that can of degreaser....?

Managed to drive down to the car wash in 1st and 3rd and washed down the back of the engine and box. Nice and clean!
But even though I tried to avoid getting water anywhere near where Lucas lives, the water still got in so I still had to push it back home anyway!!!
Back home I took off the knuckle linkages off the back of the cog box and found that the spline on the shaft from the gear box was badly worn and the spline in the linkage was non-existent!!
A quick search in the back of the shed found a replacement in good nick so on it went with a bit of loctite for good measure.
Gear changes have never felt better!!
It's not the best fix but hopefully it will last until the van's on the road.
