Post subject: | Why do Clubman door latches keep failing? |
Guys, I've got a problem that keeps coming up in my brother's 78 Clubman. My brother being mechanically inept I'm the one that keeps having to repair this problem....so onto the problem: For lack of a better description, every year and half (so it seems) the door latch on the driver's side (it's a daily driver so gets lots of use) gives up latching onto the door catch....essentially the door will "bounce" off the catch and not shut anymore. My fix? Replace it with another mechanism. Does the job......BUT I'm running out of doors to scavenge! SO...is there a fix for this problem? Or....are NEW replacement mechanisms available? Am I missing something when replacing the mechanism? Is there an adjustment I can make that will resolve the problem WITHOUT doing a replacement? I've never actually worked out a fix after pulling a mechanism apart (which was probably too long ago to remember anyhow!). Maybe I'm the only one having this problem! |

we had the same problem on satan's roller skate, new/secondhand mechanism seemed to be the only fix - the problem seemed to be inside the mechanism that screws to the door - this part doesn't look to be a servicable (ie pull apartable) item |

adjust the part where the door handle levers to pull at the mechanism, you change the height of where it levers, its imposible to exsplain but someone will get my drift and exsplain it better, my car did this and i did the above and also i adjusted the height of the doors and then tack welded the doors to the hinges so they dont sag |

Thanks everyone for the replies. Next time I get a chance to check out this problem I'll try out some of the suggestions. |

try putting new hinge pins and bushes in. I am betting that the door is sagging a bit putting everything out of alignment and wearing it faster. |
