hey guys, was thinking this would make hay a little more exciting, who can help answer tehse questions?


where from?
how to?
how much?
easy install?
pros?
cons?

anything else relevant?

A con would be they are not legal on the road - but if this is just for Hay and it is going to be trailered there any way, then why not? That's about all I know sorry.

Jamie, no idea where to get one in SA but up here we get them made by a rally legend named Arthur Jackson, he builds them specially for minis, makes up a narrow body so it sits on top of the mini hump nicely, cost is $200 (last time i bought one)

To fit them you mount them to the floor, you have to remove the centre out of the rear limiting valve, otherwise when you pull the handbrake on the valve limits the pressure, undo the brake hose into the limiting valve, get 2 new steel brake lines made 80cm approx cm long, or depending where you mount the handbrakebrake line from the limiting valve into the rear thread one on the H/B master cylinder, from the front treaded hole of the H/B mc runs back out into the limiting valve, bleed system, do touch the handbrake while bleeding, you can easily get a air lock if you fiddle with it while bleeding. Not a hard installation, just a bit fiddly

I would recommend replacing the rear wheel cylinders & flexable brake pipes on the rear trailing arms, the handbrakes generates a lot of pressure

Pro's ease of use, theres no need to brace your foot against the firewall to get the extra leverage to pull it on like the cable handbarke.

Con's you might get rego hassle's, i never have.

You may have to make a longer higher handle, again depending on where you put it.

Stew got out of SSS Automotive about 12 years ago, they were more importing jappo motors when he sold out, he's into preperation & maitaining rally/race cars atm, actually he's world renown for building 240/260 Zed rally cars, cars he's built have won the last 3 east african safari's, he knows how to screw old Datsun together.

This 'In-line' unit recently sold on ebay for $190. They usually retail around $350 - $400 or you can fabricate one up from a suitable master cylinder and some scrap iron.

Why are they illegal? I imagine it's because you need a 'hard-wired' brake in case your hydraulics fail?

Basically yes , the handbrake is classed as an emergency brake and therefore is supposed to be a seperate system to the normal braking system in case the normal system fails for whatever reason . In NSW the hand/emergency brake is tested along with the foot brakes with a G-force meter as part of the annual pink slip . Presumably you could legally fit one if you used 2 wheel cylinders in the rear brake , one hooked up to the foot brakes , one to the handbrake but you'd have to check that with an engineer . Much easier to keep the mechanical handbrake for rego checks as well as a hydraulic one for fun (2 levers) . Just need to label each lever and make sure they hydraulic one doesn't stay on like a normal handbrake .

EDIT> Maybe it would be legal in NSW if you had a locking lever on the hydraulic handbrake and dual system brakes ??? Still not sure if they'd like a hydraulic handbrake being used as a parking brake though .

Hydraulics are not considered fail-safe. There is no mechanical lock in a hydraulic system. You can't trust hydraulics to keep pressure for a long term (like for parking a car on a steep hill overnight) they will eventually lose pressure.
Handbrakes have to be mechanically operated. (rods or cables or springs)

ironically, stewart started working for Arthur at Road & Rally after doing his apprenticeship at a Mitsubishi dealership before he started SSS Automotive with Craig. Now it sounds like Arthur is working for him?

We've had a fairly long association with both of them with rally cars and sports sedans (Datsun 1600's, 180B SSS, and stanza's).
