Hi there,

ID 10 CY broke down on Saturday night between Nelson Bay and Newcastle, I went and had a look on Sunday, and it wasn't going to go. Didn't have any way to recover it that day, so planned to get it the next.

Got a call from a friend on Monday arvo offering to assist, he'd just passed it on the way home, and we were going to flat tow it later that night (don't tell anyone we were using a snatch strap, illegal in NSW).

Got another call at about 8:00, and all was ok then.

When we got there at 11:00pm the plates had been ripped off.

I suppose after having to leave it there for 2 1/2 days, the Number Plates say it all.

I've ordered a new pair from the RTA, who explained as they have been reported stolen, i'll probably get pulled up lots too.

Joy!

I used to live on that road between 2004-2005. You're lucky that's all that happened. Whenever a car broke down on that road, the plates were gone on the first day, the windows were smashed on the second day and the car was burnt on the third day.

That's a PITA but a lot of worse things could have happened. A friend of mine destroyed his diff around the corner from his house, walked home to get his dad and tow it home. Returned to find the rear window shattered and a large dent in the boot from a small boulder.. :x

To be honest, I would never leave my mini anywhere if it broke down no matter what the towing fee, especially for 2 days... that is ID 10 CY :P

Have you heard of "road side assistance" :?:  not trying to be rude but even just for the safety of your car in a situation like that, get it towed
How much did the replacement plates cost, how much dose RACV membership cost? :?
Next time it might be the snatch, smash and burn combo so in a way your lucky it was only the plates.

Yes Joe
Thats a very funny thing to say ???? What do you mean the cops stole your plates. ???

You cant just say that without being able to back up that statement. Thats almost a statement that warrants police internal affairs investigation and believe me, police will investigate their own and if they find cause they WILL hang the guilty bastards !!!!.

Back up the statement please Joe. PS I am not and have never been a copper.

I don't think we'll ever hear the REAL story there, but it is documented in the thread on the recent central coast cruise.

As I recall he was stopped, the police confiscated his plates for some reason, and they were not available when he wanted to collect them after clearing up why he was originally stopped in the first place - is that about the gist of it?

pretty much i liked to use the term stolen though cause for some strange reason the rta nor the highway patrol office could get intouch with the officer that confiscated them. and i had a massive arguement with the rta cause they wouldnt give me the plates without the old ones and when i finally explained what happened to them with a really red face they just said to me they'll file them as stolen so i could get my new ones

Well, it's costing $30.00 for the remake of the custom plates, and $35.00 for the set of Yellow "Std" plates whilst the customs get re-made. Talk about Double Dipping by the RTA.

"WantOne", I work locally in the Bay now, but when I worked in Newy I'd see the day to day changes to any broken down cars. As you said, Day 1 Plates, Day 2 Windows, Day 3 Burned. It's not so bad now, its a least a week before they're burned out. The "Bay Rats" have all grown up.

I can make many excuses as to why it took so long to get it, but as its my Son's car in reality (I just get to fix it when it's broken) I left it up to him to organise recovery. It was a good lesson for him to learn in a way, other than they're my custom plates on it, not his. And now I get to spend this week end working out why it only runs on 1-2 cylinders.

Bugger the Orange Gun, a flame thrower would be better. Unless of course you're talking Agent Orange

usually made from PVC Tube, using a flamable substance like Hair Spray or WD40 for expansion to shoot an orange out of the tube.

Can be fun, we built one about 6 foot long that went about 250m. I live on a hill over looking a beach, hmmm, Tourists can be so annoying :D :D
