Hey guys, I've got a 1973 Clubbie S, and the battery is shot. Its curently got a Bosch B406 (i think?) in there, but they seem pretty expensive to replace. I went down to Autobarn and the guide they had there said to use a Century 51. the 51 is $135 with 3 yr warranty which i consider to be a decent price. From what i understand, a new Bosch would be a fair bit more expensive.... Anyway, I have no idea with this stuff, being new to the Mini Scene. What do you recommend? What do you use? How much do/did you pay? Cheers Dan |

Biggest you can fit and that your budget allows. Bigger CCA the better. |

I use an Exide 550CCA from Big W in both ours, it's about the biggest that will fit. Standard battery for a petrol Landcruiser, etc. |

I fitted a Super Heavy Duty battery from Super Crap. It was only about $40 but was as big as will fit in the battery box. I figured even if I only got one years use out of it, it is still good value at half the price. It's still in there BTW, but since the car has been 6 months without being started or charged, it is probably a lead acid boat anchor now.

you should be able to get a bosch battery from supercrap for about $135. just check the booklet in the battery aisle and it will say how many cold cranking amps the battery needs for your car. |

I used a $35 one from supercrap in my old EA Fairmont for a year with no worries, jump started my brother in hiss Skyline twice, still no worries, apparently the massive subs and amps in his car were draining the battery... wally could only ever use about 1/3 of the power of his sound setup |

Hmm..I've got 2 amps and a subby with no head unit (just the way i bought it). I want to take them out coz I want the mini for go...not really for show (or should i say fo' sho!) Maybe thats what drained the battery thats in there at the moment....? Anyway, it cant be jumpstarted anymore so i need to buy a new one. Will try BigW thanks for the advice fellas.

I use a Deloite Battery German made fitted to BMWs and MINIs very good. They have a indicator telling you battery charge level, so if the car won;t go you can tell if its the battery or not. Recently I had my Cooper S parked up for 2 months and it held it's charge. VERY IMPRESSED so far I have bought 3 of them, for each of my cars and work utes |

make sure you dont get a battery with less cold cranking amps than your car needs or you'll be throwing your money away[/list] |

Spaceboy wrote: arent you supposed to remove the caps when you charge a battery? Some people say yes and some say no. I never bother because I figure the caps are vented. But I always turn off the charger and blow away the hydrogen gas before lifting the leads off.
I blew up a truck battery with a stray spark from an angle grinder about 25 years ago. I learned a good lesson that day!

Well, when you're driving and the alternator is throwing 30, 40 or 50A in there the caps are on aren't they. 
Most home chargers struggle to give near 10A. As said, the caps on a regular battery are vented. |
