On the gutters of my clubbie (and most others :) ) there is a lip/strip/blah there...

Whats it for? Can I chop it off? Its like a little veranda for the ants that climb on the car... they sit out there enjoying the view.

Peter.

it was designed to stop the water pouring off the roof and onto you when you open the door, it also allows for a welding lip between panels.

It's commonly referred to as a drip rail, but it's nothing of the sort.
Water won't drip off there even without it, which is why UK Minis ditched it 30 years or so ago.

I believe they were put there to stiffen the gutter so that roof racks could be fitted, but that's only my opinion.
Both are off my non- concours car now, and it'll stay that way. They are just another rust trap, they are only spot welded every 100mm or so.

I'm getting mine removed as rust is hanging out with the ants and has decided to camp out on them :x
I've heard some people say as soon as you remove them the water will rush in through the doors, but I know other people that haven't had them for 30+ years and they say it's not an issue
The idea behind them is to help sheet the rain off the windows/doors.

I don't buy that, if it's that heavy it'll get on the doors anyway.

THOSE LIPS ARE SPOT WELDED AND CAN BE REMOVED WITH APAIR OF PLIRES.AS THERE IS NO PAINT BETWEEN THEM AND THE UPPER DRIP RAIL, YOU WILL FIND IT A GOOD PLACE TO FIND RUST STARTING. WE HAVE JUST REMOVED THEM FROM AN EARLY VAN RESTORATION. IT ALSO LOOKS MUCH CLEANER.

Ok, chop the f*&ers off!

:)

Ill see, lots of work to do so if I get to that I will... now I know they aren't needed.

What about the Clubby S flare support thingoes? I have an S but will be putting different flares on. Are they just spot welded too? Just take them off with pliers?

I know that many people want them, so ill take them off carefully.

Peter

actually just took both mine off today, was a bit rusty under the gutter and i reckon the only reason rust accumulated there was because of the bloody drip tray!!! much easier to clean it up now.

go on do it!! took about 10 minutes

cheers
Ty

I read that they were added to extend the roof vertically past the sliding window rails. Maybe rain used to fall dead straight down back then??

Not req'd with wind-up windows. Not req at all as above.
