That's a curly one depending on the type, size and orientation of the SUs that you have. Just because you have two su's already doesn't make it an easy proposition to build a set up from parts. You will need the manifold and linkages to suit, a T piece for the fuel line and pancake or Cooper filter(s). This will add up to a lot of money. You may be better off picking up a set of twin su's and getting them set up for your car. Rebuildable twin SU setups come up on ebay all the time and can be had for as little as 150 in a rough and dirty state. expect to pay 350 as a minimum for a nicer pair that with a change of needles and a service should give good service. |

Firstly are the two carbs the same side or are they a left and right hand pair or , when you look at them are the fuel bowls on the same side of each carb or is one on the left on one and on the right of the other ? If they are two standard (same side) carbs then you'll need what's called W clips and a shaft to join the throttle shafts together , SU Midel in Sydney would be the best place to get them . If they are a matched pair then you'll need the normal linkages that go with them , again SU Midel would be worth talking to . It's worth restoring the carbs before using them and making sure there's no play in the shafts otherwise they'll be a pain to tune and cause you frustration and trouble . You'll also need a twin SU manifold of course and air cleaners to suit , have you only got the 2 carbs or more bits as well ? |

to give u an idea leighton, im getting a set of twin su's kitted at mini king. i bought the twins with a manifold and linkages with filters for about $275 and im paying another possibly $220-$400 to have them kitted possibly overhauled and fitted to my 1100 engine. but keep in mind that the the twins u have are left and right ones will make it easier and then like the guys have send u need the linkages and filters and the manifold. the most expensive thing will be the manifold and maybe linkages. |

These will explain what I meant a bit easier but they still aren't the best photo's , just what I have in my photobucket at the moment . These are a set of matched left and right hand SU's , have a look at the fuel bowls and you'll see they are on opposite sides . You can also see the linkages for both the choke and throttle . ![]() These are the twin SU's on the sports850 (see one fuel bowl is in the center of the two carbs) , they aren't matched left and right hand but are two standard carbs on a twin manifold with W clips and a shaft joining the two throttle spindles and the choke only working on one carb (it's enough to start the engine with) . This system was used on the sports850 and also availible as an aftermarket setup from BMC as you can see in the brochure scan below . ![]() ![]() |

Not neccesarily , left and right hand matched twins normally get the "cooper tax" treatment and cost more than two left hand carbs with a W clip . Be open to either type , the W clips work well and will most likely be a lot cheaper than matched left and right . Apart from that they both work about the same . |

IMO twin 1-1/2 are a bit too big for a roady 1098. OK on a racer. ![]() But yes they can be made to work. |

Break the cost down Joe , two left hand carbs (from $5 each upwards depending on condition) as opposed to a left and right set ($%0 a pair upwards depending on condition) , a single shaft and two W clips as opposed to the full linkages for left and right hand twins (not sure of linkage prices now but last I looked about 8 years ago it was scary), the rest of the stuff is common between whatever version you use (manifold , fuel line etc) . A lot of people think left and right hand matched are better because they are "correct" since cooper s had them but two left hand are just as good . I'm also talking for normal street mini's here , not super high performance ones or race mini's . (waits for someone to come in with figures that prove there's a difference.....) |

I've got twin 1-1/4"s on my warm 1152, and wouldn't think of putting 1-1/2"s on. The improvement from the single 1-1/2" from 4000 rpm up was dramatic, but there's nothing to be gained by going to twin 1-1/2"s.. the 1100 engine doesn't suck enough air to push the 1-1/4"s to the limit, so all you'll get with bigger carbs is less torque. As the Doc says, if you're building a screaming 1100 and have the revs you'll gain from twin 1-1/2"s, but for a road car stick with the 1-1/4"s. |
