My sisters numberplates got stolen last night, both front and rear, from Matraville in Sydney.
Keep an eye out for KAT-70Y, they are white/black euro style
Call the police if you see them

damn that sucks! The same thing happened to a girl i work with about a month ago. The police said it happens a lot lately. Normally so people can steal fuel and not get caught |

^^^^Theirs a good idea  I have about a dozen sets I've collected over the years  The only problem is I think the mini is a bit of a giveaway 
What dose KAT-70Y stand for? I assume her name is Kate or something. |

Usually they only take one though. If you park in the drive they take the one closest to the road - which you sometimes don't notice is missing for days which makes it afully hard to prove that you weren't the one who drove off. Best way to slow them down is to go to a specialty nuts and bolts place and get something that requires a special tool. Even Hex Key bolts from Bunnings will slow them down and make them go to the next car. |

mine has been rivetted on for a few years.... I think it was because I couldn't find any screws when I wanted to put it on apparently $300,000 worth of fuel gets driven off with in Melbourne every week |

Just heard about this issue on the news. Daniel, they wont show up soon I dont think, most of them steal things, ram raid, etc, etc and then ditch the car and plates. My neighbour had about 6 cop cars scream up to the house, cops jumped out, guns out full perimeter around the house. The detective was greeted by ny neighbour in his pyjamas thinking 'wtf is going on' Turns out, they stole his front plate, put on exactly the same car and did 3 armed violent hold ups at shops and attempted an armouguard van thingy... he was clueless... took some cinvincing to sort it out... Do you own white flacon EA - Yes Is your vehicle registration xxx-xxx - Yes Where is the car now Sir - At the back Come with us, your under arrest 
He was like - no no no, wait whats going on etc... and the cops took him around the back of the house and they saw the car with the rear plate, no front plate... Needed an alliby and everything... Daniel, you have obviously reported it already right?? Pete. |

Pop rivets will work as long as the hole on the back is the right size. If it has a slot in the panel you may be able to fit a flat washer over the slot. You can also get screw covers that may confuse the crook for a little while.... 
I doubt that the crook is going to carry allen keys so this may be the answer... 
There is also an old trick. You solder up the slot in the screw.
I know one way of stopping petrol theft (and therefore number plate theft). Pay before filling. |

No Paying before filling is a pain - particularly when when you dont know how much its going to cost. A swipe machine on the bowser isn't a bad idea though - it frees the bowser for use, you take the petrol you need and then go in an finalise the transaction. At least they have a number to track later. Mike |

At least they have a number to track later. Mike If you are paying by card you swipe the card, fill the tank, go back and collect the receipt. The service stations only have themselves to blame. In the old days you sat in the car and they filled the tank and collected the money. They wanted to save money so they sacked all the staff, made us do their work in filling the car and only left one person to collect the cash. Now they are complaining that people are not paying. If they filled the tank and collected the cash we wouldn't be able to do a runner.
Actually we can blame the State Governments. They were the ones that changed the rules that allowed us to fill our own tanks. Filling tanks used to be classed as a dangerous procedure, that is why they have the rules about turning off phones and stuff. The general public was not trained in the dangerous job of handling petrol and the service stations had to do all the work. |

Mick I dont remember the last time I had more than $15-20 or so in my pocket. I dont carry money - I simply dont. I do carry debit cards and I said that was a good idea. But - yes - I thoroughly resent that Australia has been changed from a society into an economy. So many businesses - big and small - are more focussed on share holder dividends than they are on the product they produce. More service station staff would stop petrol theft - sh@t - we are paying for those staff anyway

on the radio they were saying that there have been an increase in number plates being stolen in carparks and at the same time fuel being stolen has gone up as well. they say there is a link between the two. maybe use an allan key type screw or hex key screw that you find on these euro type guys. most of the time these idiots are caught on camera and dont get far. i reckon pre pay fueling is a stupid idea and a pain in the rear. especially if you are unsure of how much the car will take. you could over pay and take less fuel or not pay enough and not get enough fuel so ull have to line up again to repay. the swiping machines on the fuelers are stupid cause what happens if you only got cash? or someone decided that once they were done with it they thought u didnt need to use it and smash it.
