Post subject: | speco tacho (diode) |
hey guys firstly before i get flamed for not using the search tool...i have ![]() so anyway: i am going to be wiring up the tacho tommorow. i reckon ill have no problems wiring up most of it (ive allready got a tacho installed, so i can trace wires) but the one thing that has me muddled, is the instructions tell you "for Points ignition vehicles when fitting a speco meter tachometer to points ignition it MAY be necessary to fit the enclosed 1 amp rectifier diode" it then goes on to say that for 'mini minors': "many of these vehicles will not operate an aftermarket tacho when fitted. it may be necessary to fit a 3amp universal diode in line in the coil wire" SOOOOO> my questions are: 1. if i wire up the tacho without the diode (it may not nned it, correct??? ![]() 2. should i be wiring up the 3amp universal diode from the very start? 3. (if applicable) HOW do i wire in the diode.....from my research and basic electronics i know it goes on the wire (duh), but do i cut the wire, solder in this diode inbetween the two bits of wire.....OR....??????? Cheers guys (oh and mods if you wanna move this thread to somewhere else thats allgood) ![]() |

If you need a diode and don't put it in there is a high probability you could bugger the taco. Put it in anyway - won't harm if not needed Put it at either end of the connecting wire - no need to cut unless you can't get at the ends - and yes solder the connections and preferably shrink wrap the joins |

Put it at either end of the connecting wire - no need to cut unless you can't get at the ends - and yes solder the connections and preferably shrink wrap the joins Don't solder until you have tested it, if the diode is reversed the motor won't run. ![]() |

sorry i just want to check... um...so ive got my green wire thats heading to the coil.....do i cut that wire and solder in that diode (after testing which direction it faces) in between those 2 bits of wire?? thanks |

thanks heaps for the help guys installed it tonight....had a few hiccups due to the diode, firstly not facing the correct way, then not getting connection to the wire (what do you expect when a lazy-ass like me puts it in elec tape and expects it to work ![]() ![]() thanks again ![]() |
