Post subject:  Subframe Help
Hi i was wanting to remove my front subframe and was wondering how many bolts there were to remove. Its a clubman. I was i can see 2 at the front 4 on the shelf bit at the fire wall but thats it. Are there any more?

You nearly got them all, you also have the bolts that will be found at the back of the subframe where it bolts to the front foot wells.

Kool so is there only 2 there? And also do i have to support the car with stands while i unbolt it?

Yeah, just the four bolts at the front corner of the floor on both sides of the transmission tunnel.. You will need the axle stands.
Every few months someone spots another item in the paper where a person is crushed under a car supported only by a jack. They fail from time to time. Ask Davo111 who has attended in his line of work a recent accident such as this.

If you don't have them, Supercrap is nearly closed for today but they have 25% of all tools this weekend...(I got a cheap arc welder and two engine stands to make my new mini rotisserie ;) )
With the time shift, the WA ausmini'ers might still be able to make use of the discounts...

ok i'll give it a go. I have the stands. When i remove the bolts to the subframe do i nedd to take it out there and then or can i leave it with un done bolts on stands fir a little bit?

If you have the engine in the subframe still you should support the weight of the engine from under the subframes until you are set up to lower it out.
Then be cautious where you put the axle stands or you will bend the floor pan. Consider using pieces of timber to distribute the weight of the car over a wider patch of the car's floor pan.

Or lift the car off the subframe, not the other way around.

If there's no engine, then leave a couple of bolts with the nuts on a few turns while you remove the rest. It hepls to have someone around to help you lower it out.

ok so i have another question. Ive disconnected all the wires the clutch stuff um taken off the steering column. I was just wondering do i have to disconnect the gear lever at the gearbox or can i just undo it from the underbelly? also i need to disconnect the front brake hoses is this rite? ummmmm is there anything i need to disconnect?

You can do it either way, undo it at the box or leave it attached. I don't know if you have a remote or rod change box, but if it is rod change you will need a pin punch to remove a roll pin at the gearbox end .

If you leave the gear change attached to the car while the engine is out, you will need to stop it from sagging or the rubber mounts will be torn after a few days.

LOL yeh ive marked them all. Well i hope i have. Anyway i have a rod change but i think i mite leave it attached and take the whole lot out. But yeh umm i think ive got everything if not i'll see thanks for the help if anyone else has anything to say let me know. Thanks

you need a workshop manual with the wiring diagram.... too easy

blake, you'll need to undo the U bolts for the steering rack - a bit further up the firewall on the inside

I have such a manual. The problem is none of them match the 78 clubman exactly and I found at least one error which had the wiper swich short circuiting through the motor. :x
Still lesson learned. :lol:

Quick Question what would need to be done to fit a front mounted radiator? I was thinking of doing it but i wasnt sure about the thermo fan. How does it hook up?
