Ok today i was driving to work and my mini started to coff and splutter and die so i pulled over to side of road. and i had been mucking around with points the night before so had thought they had closed up. i put a new set in on the side of the road at lunch time set the point gap to 15 thou.started it and idle was good and as i started to drive coff and splutter again so pull back over. thought maybe fuel blockage so pulled fuel filter out and put line straight to carby still no go. thought maybe it was float level stuck so pulled it out was a little stuck so freed it up.still same problem idle ok and under acceleration just coff splutter and die.so decided drive it to work where im a apprentice mechanic. going through main street of camden coofing spluttering backfiring and going about 2km and hour.then all off a sudden just takes off like nothing was ever wrong.so get it to work all is good .i pulled the top of the carby off where the needle sits and i cleaned all that to make sure that was free also and oiled it up moving freely. so i thought my problem was fixed then while driving home same thing.coff splutter die and take off.i dont know what to check now ive also checked h/t leads and spark plugs and gaps.also filled up day before , but if it was a bad bach of fuel you would thing that it do it all the time as now it coffs and splutters intermitantly any advice would be appreciated and thanks in advance hopefully thats enough info to give yous a idea of what it is cheers TUCK3R |

Also check your fuel filter and possibly even the fuel pump as it sould like fuel once you load it up with revs. Mike. |

he said he went straight to carby and it didnt fix it.. possible coil, check the oil in the carby make sure its not to thick or to thin. had the same problem with my carby once that seemed to be the drama |

all off a sudden just takes off like nothing was ever wrong.so get it to work all is good ive also checked h/t leads and spark plugs and gaps. so you were mucking around with the points, when the points move, the timing can move too... but I doubt that's your problem, I'd suggest trying another coil too, but in the process, you might just find that the little +'ve and -'ve wires to the coil have dodgy/dirty connections, you might also have the wire from the coil to the dizzy earthing or frayed where it enters the distributor - though it's not uncommon for a coil to simply crap itself overnight being an apprentice mechanic, you'll learn to go back to basics and work through problems like this systematically, start with simple checks to make sure everything is in order and connected properly, rather than the scatter gun approach of jumping from the carb to the distributor to the fuel filter to whereever else... possibly skipping over something very simple that is causing the problem |

yeah same thing just happened to me, my problem was the air filter, i just toook it off and went for a spin around the block and it was good, time for a new air filter. GIVE IT A GO, is restricting the air flow so now u have to much fuel trying to dunp itself inthe engine, another indication is ur blowing a bit of smoke and your car smells more of petrol then it normally does. bill |

I had a very intermittent issue that under heavy acceleration the engine would splutter, it turned out the be the 12v supply to the coil was intermittent due to the wire working its way loose inside the female crimp terminal onto the V+ on the coil. Only when the engine rocked slightly in the mounts would the wire loose contact hence cutting the ignition. |
