I have an electronic dizzy to put in, (as myn loves to adjust itself) but was just wondering if the coils where interchangable or are points dizzy's coils different to electronic dizzy's coils? Cheers |

The dizzy's differ in the amount of charge they are able to put across when the spark plug fires. They do this by having lower resistance and therefore can consume more current. Standard mini dizzy's had points, so the size of the coil was restricted to the amount of current an archaic set of points could carry without melting from the heat generated switching the coil current on and off. I don't know which electronic dizzy you have put in however. Is it a pulsar dizzy or a module, or an electronic dizzy like the 123?? |

I havnt put it in yet, I got it with the motor, but when the shop (different then where I got the engine) put the new motor in they said it was mssing the module (which is actually screwed to the side of it???) Im thinking it was a standard one, it has 'Lucas 54403817' on the top, but hasnt got the cap or rotor |

FWIW, I changed from a Lucas distributor to the 123, and didn't change the coil with no adverse affects. I expect a zappier coil would give me a fatter spark, but I'm not convinced it's necessary. The leccy dizzy made such a huuuuge difference to the drivability and performance of the engine, I didn't go looking for more

The standard coil won't make any difference to the motor's running, but will supposedly improve winter morning starts. Just because it can handle a higher power coil doesn't mean it has to have one fitted. You probably won't notice the difference. |

The trouble now with the 123 dizzy is that it fires so reliably that I get ignition on the first power stroke while turning on the starter motor, which kicks it off the bendix gear before it gets enough momentum to start for real. Where before I could get by without, now I gotta use choke whenever the engine's not hot

It would make it more reliable in the wet and it would mean I wouldnt have to change the points again though??... I have a feeling its my dizzy playing up at the moment... I need some daylaight for a good look |

Absolutely, it'll do that. Mine drove through absolutely torrential rain and didn't bat an eyelid (other than a squeal from the fanbelt as it slipped a little). The old Lucas used to start coughing and spluttering at the first sign of decent rain (or even big spray from traffic). Best mod ever. |

It's the design and quality of the caps which cause the problems, not really the dizzy itself. When they wanted to do things right it went a whole lot better. The Mk2 dizzy used before the narrow clubby ones came out never seemed to give as much trouble as the early side entry caps. |

Im thinking it was a standard one, it has 'Lucas 54403817' on the top, but hasnt got the cap or rotor This is a standard A+ dissy and yes there is a module required (not hard to get)on the side of it of which will be required to fit and wire in, i reccommend fitting an "electronic ignition coil" with these dissy's (i used a bosch one, works a treat) |

Yeah, was quite an eye-opener when I did it. So much smoother at idle and everywhere else, and the thing just wants to rev its tits off now, where Mr. Lucas ran out of guts around 5k RPM.

speaking of getting wet... I put a pulsar dizzy in a couple of years ago, and it goes fine. However I'd never (ever) had trouble with the old lucas one getting wet, I even drove through a creek once, but the pulsar one got soaked and stopped 3 times in 2 weeks when we had a bit of rain before christmas last year the cap seals better now
