Post subject:  new b series engine smokey

Howdy,
Fired up my donk for the first time yesterday, its an mgb series 2 1620cc motor. It blows a fair bit of black smoke when running. Its has the full works from top to bottom, everything has been recondition or new, even carby (zenith 34V) was reconditioned. Does anyone know how long this lasts for? Im asuming that the rings need a chance to "bed" in. I was adviced that it takes around 100miles on this kind of donk for some reason but a second opinion cant help. I dont recall it happening on any a series donk i have rebuilt before.

regards
Justin

Wern't mgb's 1800cc? mga had 1500 or 1600 I think but the B that I had was 1800, but that was back in the 80's :)
Is it a 3 bearing or 5 bearing crank?
Why have you got a Zenith carby?, has it been jetted right for you motor.
Does sound (?) way to rich.

I had my B rebuilt with the works including baffled sump, ballanced & blueprinted, port and polish head, bigger stainless valves, 60 thou over bore, hepolite pistons, good road cam, Weber carby (just cos I love the noise) and lots of other little tricks the guy did that I have long forgoten (fitted a remote oil filter off a slant six Valiant which did away with the crapy cartridge filter)
I think he changed or modified everything except the rocker shaft,

Beautiful cars to look at and drive but still not fast enough for a twenty year (or 48) old so trader her in on a Mazda RX2

Lol, motor is in an austin a60 cambridge. Spark plugs are black in colour, but not sooty or caked in oil. I was thinking the mixture setting was wrong as well but trusted that the mechanic who rebuild the carby would have that one sorted. When your crusiing along, smoke belows from the exhaust but was advised by the missus who was driving behind me that it eases up when you drive for a while.

mgb series 2, has a 1620cc (1600) motor, mga's had the 1500cc. THe mgb then moved to the 1800cc donk.

Get her to drive it and (shudder) talk to her on a cellphone so you know when she's flooring it. If it puffs black smoke under acceleration, I'd say it was a fuelling problem.

<edit> My Commer blows black smoke when running with the choke on; once warm, it is pretty clean.

all mgb's from 1962-80 were 1800cc first ones 3 bearing then 5
mga's were 1500, then progressed to 1600.
mk 2 MGA's were 1622, not a common engine

Yep...MGAs had 1500, 1600 and 1622 pushrod motors, as well as a 1600 Twin Cam (2111 made). The 1620 motor was unique to BMC Australia and was put into Major Elites and the like, never into an MGA, even those assembled in Australia. MGBs had only ever had 1800 or 3500 (and only 2591 of those) motors...and as stated, there were 2 different 1800 motors for the MGB - 3 bearing and 5 bearing...3 bearing rev much more freely than 5 (ifyou are game! :D )

Put your hand/rag or something near the zoorst pipe and have a whiff to see what it smells like. Black smoke is power smoke (rich), have a look on channel 7 now at the V8's, they all blow black smoke from the rich mixture.

If it's oil buring it will stink although you can expect a bit of oil loss during the run-in period.

Oil smoke is blue/white-ish. If its black it'll definitely be fuelling up/ running rich. When you say the carby was overhauled, was it adjusted on the car once it was running?

Look for things like a sticking needle and seat which can cause flooding etc. Not sure exactly what the Zenith carby's are like, are they downdraught? If so when idling is there fuel coming out of the main jet

Alright, I'm asking about MGC timing chains (not cheap Indian rubbish) and oil pumps (ditto) :D

Do you have an oil bath air filter or a paper one. Check to see if the air filter is not clogged or over full.
