Post subject:  Rust removal from components - see for yourself

I followed the topic about vinegar for rust removal, and seen the molasses technique and so on. I haven't tried the electrolytic bath for rust removal. However, I've tried various products and this one, Evaporust, seems the most effective and easy to use. In fact, and you can judge for yourself, I think these results are outstanding and bordering on unbelievable.

I should state I have no financial interest in the company, just bought some and tried it.

The items I tried it on yesterday are the exterior mirror from my Commer van, and a Metro vented brake disk.

Note: The shaft of the mirror is cleared eroded by the rust - it was millimetres thick in flaky rust. This is the result straight out of the solution this morning. About a 14 hour soak. Under the rust was the original paint which was unaffected.

Metro Brake Disk:
Soaked half in the solution for the same length of time as the mirror. Rust on left, clean on the right of the image.

Why am I posting this? Well, vinegar, coke and molasses cost money. So does Evapo-rust, but it works and it works really, really well. It's reusable - you just pour it back into the container and reuse until it turns black. Then you buy some more. So I thought you should know there's commercial solutions out there that actually do what it says on the tin.

Note: This is not an acid. The exact way it works (chelation) is explained in scientific terms on their website (see below).

There may be a similar product in Australia, or maybe Evapo-rust is available there, but their website is http://www.evapo-rust.co.nz/

D'OH , I looked at that one and thought it was a groove across the disc like some have and not the liquid's "tide mark" .....

Pretty impressive results though , the mirror post especially . Does it rust quickly if left exposed to air afterwards like other things do or odes it leave a film of something over it ?

I rinsed the solution off, and then as suggested by the manufacturer, I dipped it back in the solution and let it air dry. This gives it a lot of protection for subsequent rusting for a couple of months. I've cleaned up some tools with it, and the claims do stack up. So no, it doesn't immediately begin rusting again.

Ha ha! Looks either chopper-stylee (maybe needs to be chromed) or like a discarded snake skin :)

I'll actually replace the mirror strut with a new piece of solid rod, I think. I love my old van too much to customise it. In fact, I wish it could stay nice and rusty (surface rust only) forever. It looks cooler just as it is.
