I followed the topic about vinegar for rust removal, and seen the molasses technique and so on. I haven't tried the electrolytic bath for rust removal. However, I've tried various products and this one, Evaporust, seems the most effective and easy to use. In fact, and you can judge for yourself, I think these results are outstanding and bordering on unbelievable.
I should state I have no financial interest in the company, just bought some and tried it.
The items I tried it on yesterday are the exterior mirror from my Commer van, and a Metro vented brake disk.
Commer mirror before:
Soaking:
After:
Note: The shaft of the mirror is cleared eroded by the rust - it was millimetres thick in flaky rust. This is the result straight out of the solution this morning. About a 14 hour soak. Under the rust was the original paint which was unaffected.
Metro Brake Disk:
Soaked half in the solution for the same length of time as the mirror. Rust on left, clean on the right of the image.
Why am I posting this? Well, vinegar, coke and molasses cost money. So does Evapo-rust, but it works and it works really, really well. It's reusable - you just pour it back into the container and reuse until it turns black. Then you buy some more. So I thought you should know there's commercial solutions out there that actually do what it says on the tin.
Note: This is not an acid. The exact way it works (chelation) is explained in scientific terms on their website (see below).
There may be a similar product in Australia, or maybe Evapo-rust is available there, but their website is
